With hardly a dissenting voice the metropolitan critics pronounce "Outward Bound to be, if not the most original, by far the most thrilling play of the year. The action is laid in the bar of a strange ship which plies between the ports of Life and the Beyond, with no port or starboard lighta, no captain or shipa company, nothing but the dread booming of Drakes Drum, at melancholy intervals. The only person in charge is Scrubby, the steward. The passengers are the Dead, yet retaining all the appearances, humors, poses and characteristics of their lives. They are Ann and Henry, inseparable young lovers, who are dubbed "half-way- s because they commit'.ed suicide; Mr. Prior, a moody young dypsomaniac, who is the first one to suspect that he and his companions a maare dead; Mrs. Clivenden-Banktron, whose first concern is social caste; Rev. William Duke, a young clergyman, who believes in being as human as a stock broker about his job; Mrs. Midget, a worn but unem littered charwoman who is later revealed as the mother of Prior; and Mr. e Lingley, of Lingly, Ltd., a millionaire. From this company and their strange circumstances first amusing, and then pitiful the author makes his play one of the most interesting, novel, and sincerely moving entertainments of this or any other season. A play of such nobility as to call forth the best from its actors, whenever and however performed. It may have been from the line in the second act of Dear Brutus, Wouldnt it be awful to wake up in the morning, daddy, and find one wasnt alive? that Moroni Olsen got the inspiration to follow up that play with Outward Bound. At any rate, that is exactly what all the characters in "Outward Bound do. And it is "awful too for them e. although most amusing for the That is, at first; later on but thats a different story.
