Now, the U. S- Mail loses a great deal of business. It is better, for instaece, for the Ilyrum people, when they want to send letters to Wellsville or Providence, to put a boy on a horse and make private ex press do the work of public mails. than to have their letters conveyed round by Wellsville to Logan, and lie there for two or three days rest- Jvillc gttwtioti. excepted 12 miles. 4; total, sub-carri- Editor Penrose, Cnnrles aalW.Bwiaess Manages. For half a century these Indians have toiled in tho wilderness, and made that region laugh with happy homes, and covered it with thriving villages and hamlots. To dispossess them of their vested tights for the purpose of propping up the fortunes of a class who have not yet learned the first principles of would be positive Tandalism. Logan, Cache county, has now a daily mail.. This arrangement was effected during the recent visit of Col. Wickizer to the north. We ought to hear no more complaints from tho chief city of Cache. But how about the other set' laments, which only get I mail ? We have as a from them as from many complaints Logan. The chief trouble lies in the eouthern part of the valley, and we would like to wake a suggestion to the special mail agent for Utah in regard to the service to Providence Millville, Ilyruni, Paradise, Wells-ill- e and Mendon, which comprise the settlements iu the southern division of Cache couuty. We have learned of Ilyruni letters and newspapers Iving at Mendon, and of mail matter from Wellsville to Ilyrum only four miles distant being carried to Logan aud left there until the next mail day to the south. There is a simple remedy for the evils complained uf in these Letall the Cache Valley mail go to Lo gan Mendon niuy be excepted, as it is on the line of the Utah Northern Railroad, or it may be supplied by pouch back from Logan. Let the carrier receive his mail at Logan, proceed to Providence 2 miles; to in New England arid Canada. The issue was more favorable than expect ed. There is every prospect that next winter the Empire State will take initiatory steps which will materially aid in solving the great sub ject of transportation with which the interests of every city, State and the entire nation are closely identified. The attitude assumed by the mercantile classes throughout the country, and the farmers of the West, re garding the extortionate rates of transportation is decidedly firm, and they appear to be unshaken in their determination to struggle for uniform rates fixed by law. Robert Tyler, Esq., son of Tyler, has published a letter correcting some mistatements re garding the pecuniary condition of his father's family. With rare dignity and almost offended pride he declines, in their behalf, gratefully but firmly, any assistance tendered to gladden them in their green old age. Mr. Tyler acknowledges that his father retired from the Presidency almost destitute, having, during his term, expended his entire salary. Tho custom of conferring gifts upon public servants was not introduced during those halcyon days. The age of venality, when men invested with the robes of office and to whom were confided sacred trusts, condescended to accept bribes, was yet distant. The went to his grave full of and honors, bequeathing only years a name honored and unsullied, as a legacy to his devoted fr mily. Mr. Tyler takes occasion to say that his mother has a modest compe tence and is above the compassion of the world.
