A full state and county ticket Is to be named this afternoon. The Republican state convention for the nomination of presidential electors, two congressmen-at-largo and an cntiro state ticket opened this forenoon at the Salt Lake theater thea-ter in Salt Lake, The convention, because of tho contests for almost every office, promises to be the most exciting held in years. United States Senator George Sutherland will preside as tompo-rary tompo-rary chairman and deliver tho keynote key-note speech, which will occupy most of the forenoon session. Arrangements Arrange-ments for the temporary organization organiza-tion of the contention wero made yesterday afternoon at a meeting of the Republican state committee. Temporary Offcers I The following temporary officers were appointed by the state committee: com-mittee: Temporary chairman George Sutherland of Salt Lake. First vice chairman Daniel Hein-cr Hein-cr of Morgan. Second vice chairman C. A Johnson John-son of Grand. Third ice chairman Wilford Day of Iron. Temporary secretary H. L. Cum-tnlngs Cum-tnlngs of Salt Iake. First assistant secretary William H. DeWolf of Beaver. Second assistant secretary H. J. Norrls, Jr., of Rich. Third assistant secretary Julian M. The state committee discovered that through an error in the certification certifi-cation of returns from Millard coun- ty that county was given only eleven delegates when it was entitled to thirteen. .The correction was made anl Millard will have the two addi- j tlonal delegates, J At the completion of the keynote I speech of the temporary chairman this morning tho committees on cro- j dentials, permanent organization and I order of business, and platform and j resolutions were named. These com- j mitteos consist of one member from ! each county of the stato on each j committee. I For congress there are many aspl- I rants and this Is certain to "be the ! principal contest of the convention It is almost the unanimous predlc- 9 lion that it will take more than one, a and perhapes several, ballots to de- C cido the candidates. 9 For governor there will be no op- I position to GoAernor William Spry fl for renominatlon. the federal bunch I having consented not to oppose Spry Jj for renominatlon by acclamation. Judge J. E. Frlck of the supreme court and A C Nelson. Btato superintendent super-intendent of public instruction, will probably be likewise named br acclamation. An interesting contest for secretary secre-tary of state is certain to be precipitated. precipi-tated. Secretary C. S. Tingey, the Incumbent, appears to be the strongest strong-est candidate for the position, but he has active opposition that may proe fatal to his candidacy Tho fact that he is a third term candidate is being used as an effective argument against him State Treasurer David Matt-son Matt-son has a strong following for this office and appears to bo a dangerous contender for the place J A. Edwards Ed-wards has many friends who are working hard for his nomination for tbis office and many of his supporters support-ers regard him as n winner. It is not unlikely that Cache county will ask that this nomination go to B. W Robinson and in the event of ITowel! falling to secure renomination to congress con-gress Robinson would doubtless be a strong candidate. For auditor the contest appears to bo between Lincoln J Kellv and C. R. Jones, with Ivor Aja- of Tooele, a nossibllltv Both Mr Kelly and Mr. Jones are strong candidates and tho supporters of both are working hard for them Though Tooele delegates are urging the nomination of Ajax for auditor, William Archibald, of Summit county formerly a member of the state legislature. Is here working work-ing for Jones and last night predicted predict-ed his nomination. Tho contest for state treasurer is one of the closest of the convention. Samuel G Dve, county clerk of Wo-bcr Wo-bcr county, has the backlncr of a ma-I'oritv ma-I'oritv of the delegates of his county for the position and is considered by some to be the stroncest candidate, Mrs Margaret Zane Witcher of Salt Lake, has much strength throughout tho state. Should she be nominated and elected, she will be the first woman wo-man jn America to hold an electivo state office other than that of superintendent su-perintendent of schools State Auditor Audi-tor Jesse D Jewkes Is another strong candidate for state treasurer He is being supported by Emery county and several other southern Utah counties and has considerable strength in Salt Lake. Delegates from American Fork are booming Representative John H. Wootton for this place. For presidential electors, the onlv person thus far suggested is W. S. McCornick of Salt Lake. If Mr. Mc-Cornicl; Mc-Cornicl; will consent to be a candidate candi-date he will likely be named by acclamation ac-clamation no |
