At the meeting of the city council last night Harold .1. Peery was selected se-lected to act as councilman to succeed suc-ceed his brother, K E. Peery, resigned. re-signed. The vote was unanimous. The returns of the late liquor election elec-tion were gone over and found to be correct, the vote being as announced in the Examiner on the morning after the election. The city went "wet" by a majority of 1.GG2 , No discrepancies discrep-ancies were discovered and the tally sheets were correct An ordinance fixing the business district of the city where liquor may be sold under a license passed Its third and final reading, President Browning and Councilman Humphris voting in the negative These gentlemen gentle-men contended that it would he better to make Five Points a separate district, dis-trict, inasmuch as thore is a great deal of lorritory between Twenty-second Twenty-second street and that locality in which it will likely never be desirable desira-ble to licenso saloons The district provided for in the or-, dinance extends from Second street to Twent3'-sixth on Washington avenue; Twenty-fifth street from Washington to Wall avenues; Twenty-fourth street from Wall to Washington avenues and Wall, Lincoln and Grant avenues between be-tween Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Twenty-fifth streets. The matter being called to the attention at-tention of the council by the mayor, the city engineer was Instructed to furnish the county assessor with plats of the dedicated district of Hudson avenue and Canal alley, so that the property there may be properly assessed. as-sessed. Mayor Glasmnnn also called the attention at-tention of the council to the fact that the state engineer reports that the city's water and reservoir rights in South Fork canyon will nor expire until un-til Juno 1. 1912. The mayor suggested, however, that inasmuch as the right is held In the name of the former city engineer, A. F Parker, that a quit claim deed be obtained from him showing that the surveys and expenditures expend-itures made by him were paid for by the city. The .recommendation of the mayor was accepted nnd the engineer and city attorney wore instructed to attend to the matter by clearing the title. The bonds of seven applicants for licenses to retail liquor were accepted and approved and the matter of granting grant-ing the licenses referred to the judges of the district court Thq sanitary cammitteo reported against leasing the pest house grounds and the report was adopted. Property owners on North Lincoln avenue petitioned tho council to npt abandon the idea of opening the avenue ave-nue from the Ogden river to Second street. The matter was referred to tho city attorney. The city fathers accepted "with thanks" the Invitation of Superintendent Superinten-dent John M. Mills of the city schools to attend a lecture to be given by Dr Curtis nt the High School building Wednesday evening. The doctor will lecture on tho question of "Play Grounds" for tho children. Upon the recommendation of the water works committee, It was decided de-cided to extend the water mains of Seventh street and place a hydrant In that locality. The matter of creating a sidewalk district on Wall avenue between Twentieth street and Willow street was referred to the city onglneer, and the matter of extending water mains into that territory was referred to the water works committee.
