Show TRIBUTE TO MEMORY OF BRIGHAM YOUNG Salt Lake, Juno 2. The one hundredth hun-dredth and tonth anniversary of the birth of Brlgham Young was fittingly observed yesterday by direct descendants descend-ants of the noted pioneer and leader, who celebrated the event with song nnd ceremony at the old historic Lion house In South Temple street during the afternoon and evening, after the grave and burial ground In First ave-nuo ave-nuo had been literally covered with flowers. A general assemblage of the participants parti-cipants took place at the Lion house at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. A procession pro-cession of 150 young and old persons of Brlgham Young lineage and Sunday Sun-day school children was formed, which marched to the First avenue burial grounds, bedecking the historic grave with flowers and decorative offerings of-ferings Following tho simple ceremonies cere-monies at the grave a dance and muslcale was held in tho Lion house Those "who rendered musical numbers num-bers Included Hugh W. Dougall, Spencer Clawson, Jr., Daniel Spencer, Rhean Spencer and others, grandchildren grandchil-dren of Brlgham Young. Alonzo Young, Don Carlos Young, Willard Young, B. Morris Young, Mrs. Phebe Young Beattle and Mrs Mario Young Dougall made appropriate talks in reminiscence of former Jays at tho old structure, which was at one time used as a gymnasium under tho physical direction of Hyrura B. Claw-son, Claw-son, who Instructed the Young children chil-dren and others in the use of dumb bells, bean bags and swords Ono of the speakers brought out tho fact that Brlgham Young was one of tho first to establish a gymnasium in the west, which fact is being used by Prof. Jakob Bolin of the.JJniverslty of Utah In tho history of gymnastics he is compiling. The dance and musical was continued contin-ued during the evening, when a musical musi-cal programme was carried out, the artists being J. Walsh Young, Miss Lucille Young, Alex Campbell and Miss Enid May. Refreshments were served during the Interim between the afternoon and evening gatherings. A number of prominent church leaders lead-ers attended the celebration. Mrs. Eliza Burgess Young, the only surviving surviv-ing widow of Brlgham Young, was unable un-able to take part in tho festivities. There are ten sons, sixteen daughters and four adopted children of Brlgham Younir now living, whlob. with all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren runs the total number of descendants des-cendants Into the hundreds. |
