An entirely unforeseen development on the caso of the killing of Marcia S. Groff, a widow, who was Gtranglcd at hor homo, 222 East Second South street, Saturday night, came about yesterday, placing at naught all former for-mer theories of the killing held by tho police, and seriously involving William Wil-liam Schmidt, an eccentric character who came to Salt Lake from Ogdon on January 11. Mayor Samuel C Park yeBterday afternoon authorized B. F Gram, chfeC of police, to offer a rewnrd of 5200 for (ho arrest and conviction of Schmidt. It is alleged bv tho, police that at 9:30 o'clock Saturday night Schmidt and Mrs. Groff loft tbe FTitz cafe, 211 South State ttrcet, togethor and that this was the last time tho woman was seen until hor body was discovered by John Lorain Rose, a young man who rented a room in the Groff house F Hoffman, a waiter at tho Fritz cafe, says that Schmidt made the statement to him that he would get even with Mrs. Groff for an alleged wrong, If he had to kill her. A card bearing the name of "William "Wil-liam Schmidt" was found in the empty emp-ty purse of Mrs. Groff yesterday by J W. Groff, son of tbe dead woman. It is alleged by employes of the Fritz cafe that Schmidt showed them a small red-covered book during last week, containing colored pictures, designs and drafting work. This book was found in tho trunk of Mrs. Groff yesterday and was identified as that which Schmidt displayed by Hoffman Hoff-man and other employes of tho cafe. Doctor's Statement. Dr Alfred T. Fnerbcr, 372 1-2 South Main streot, had treated Schmidt during dur-ing the past ten days for neuralgia and stomach trouble. Dr Faorber says that Schmidt told him Saturday that he Intended" visiting Mrs. Groff for tho purpose of getting back a part of $5 which he. said ho had given her a few days, before. According to Dr. Faerber. Scheldt told him that his real name was William Schmidt, Schmidt rented a room at tlio Salvation Sal-vation Army rooming house in Orpheum Orphe-um alley Saturday ovonlng, but did not return to jhe rooming house Saturday Sat-urday night to occupy the room. Schmidt was laet scon at about 2 o'clock Monday afternoon In Baer Bros, saloon, 245 South State street. At this time he carried two hand grips and told the bartender that he Intended In-tended loaving the city. He did not mention his point of destination, how-ever. how-ever. Dr Faorber says that Schmidt told him ho Intended going to Call- fornla when tho opportunity offered Schmidt displayed a small amount of money to those In the Baer saloon Early Saturday evening Schmidt told Dr Faerber that his entire fortune amounted to 50 cents The physician saw Schmidt pay 25 cents for a night's lodging at tho Salvation Army rooming room-ing house. Thus he was left with but 25 cents. J L Rose and other friends of the dead woman say that Mrs. Groff usually carried $2 or $3 In her purse. |
