Show GOV COV WELLS CONDEMNS CONDEMN S ROBERTS urges the people to decide the polygamy question at ho harnd md does not vant want the old fight brought on or a bitter warfare waged against b thi gives his het sons at the republican rally held in salt lake city friday evening gov wells made a vigorous speech it la is in great part a condensation of the course pursued by D F roberts and his violation of the laws of the state and Is as follows having been requested to act as chairman of this meeting although not accustomed to preside at such gatherings or to make campaign speeches I 1 I 1 feel it a duty to express some of my views in regard to the coming election much has been said in the newspapers and from the platform in regard to what are and what are not the issues in the campaign some of the republican speakers insist that the tariff Is the issue and proceed to a discussion C of the benefits which have been derived by utah as a result of the republican rehe administration T the he demo cratte orators and the chief candidate of that party particularly are urging that sliver silver Is the real issue because the tariff is practically determined and that the silver question Is not determined I 1 am glad to know that the bemo democrats of this state have decided that the tariff question Is settled and I 1 trust that they will never agitate it again NO FIGHT AGAINST SILVER tile republican speakers claim that the ther lawer question cannot be an issue hero here because virtually the entire people are in favor of tree free coinage and that where there is no antagonist there can be no fight it these arc are facts it we would uld almost appear that the millennium has been ushered in ili and it if we are all of one mind upon the great national issues silver and the tariff why then should we not make it unanimous an and all vote the republican ticket but I 1 am sincerely afraid that a fear still lurks in the minds of some of us tha that t f the democratic candidate for congress from this state Is elected and a buffi clent number of democrats from other states are elected that the power of numbers may generate some new and designing wilson who will attempt to get through another wilson bill to strike from the miners hands his pick and shovel to impoverish again the men who are now realizing a degree of prosperity from their wool and shee sheep p and cattle interests and to generally paralyze anew the industries of the country CANT CHANGE HIS 1118 for one I 1 do not believe that the democratic candidate has had a complete change of heart and that now he Is a protectionist protection lt when yesterday he was a tree free trader I 1 admit the p ossi ability ot of error in the matter however b because cause bis his record demonstrates with what ease case he can shift his position upon a great public question only afew a few tew short years yearb ago he made public the announcement no that owing to his attitude tn on the womans comans suffrage question he had permanently retired from politics that he realized he had dug his political grave that he had gone to his cold and silent tomb yet today we find him a very lively corpse running for congress and courting the voters he sought to keep beep forever dis franchised hence I 1 say the people require 1 greater assurance than mere assertion that with him the tariff Is not an issue As for myself believing as I 1 do that protection to american industries Is essential to prosperity I 1 will vote for no man who Is not a thorough dyed in the wool protectionist and ard I 1 do not believe that mr roberts will claim that he la is such on the other hand land my belief in the benefits to be derived by the whole people and particularly ticul arly the west convince me that the tree free coinage of silver Is an absolute and imperative necessity and I 1 will vote for no man who Is not n my opinion a thorough convert to bimetallism mr E EI ldredge dredge has given substantial assurance that he Is suen and I 1 am satisfied to vote for him ROBERTS disabilities there Is another question involved in this campaign that I 1 should be glad to ignore but like banques ghost it will not down and whenever the situa tion Is discussed it rears its spectral form before our eyes to the of every other issue I 1 allude tc the personal disabilities of the emo crable candidate and to the attitude he has placed himself in before the people I 1 have no hesitation in saying that in my opinion it was a very great for him in bis his alleged present predicament whatever it Is to attempt to be a candidate tor for the office for which ho he Is running it was an equally g great reat for the democratic party to nominate him in view of these that the views of the minority did not delegates to the democratic convention in their fight against the candidate fully expressed my views on that subject and I 1 regard it A as a great pity that the vie views w S of the did not prevail and BO so have spared us tills this imbroglio consequences OF HIS ELECTION I 1 realize that this Is a subject that ought not to belong to politics thatis that it has no part in national politics but in view of the pledges which the people have made here and which the nation understands and in view of the pledges which I 1 have made myself I 1 cannot shut my eyes to the consequences that will come it if mr air roberts shall be elected to congress it Is unnecessary to refer to the solemn assurances of 0 j the people on this question we all understand der stand that they were made and that mr roberts as much as any other public speaker has frequently expressed himself as appalled and astonished toni shed that the sincerity of the people ot of utah should be questioned in regard to their abandonment of old conditions imposed by statehood in my inaugural address as well as at various other times in public and private I 1 have given my personal assurance that the question of polygamy as affecting the people of utah was a dead issue and that I 1 believed that it would not return again as a public question to vex us having faith as I 1 had and still have in the manifesto of president woodruff and its subsequent adoption by the people INJURY TO THE STATE now it Is alleged that the people have receded from their position in this matter but a man who does not deny that he Is living in violation of the laws of the state has accepted a nomination tor for office and very great publicity has been given to his ills domestic relations and it if elected all these facts will be known by congress when lie presents his credentials to the house I 1 am unable to tell what congress may do in the matter as to whether he will be seated or not but I 1 feel sure that the agitation of the question will be a very great detriment to the state of utah and to every interest of the people every financial interest here will suffer every indusi trial enterprise of the state will be more or less retarded the interests of the dominant church itself will be injured and liberties of the very class to which mr air roberts belongs will bo be placed in jeopardy A VOTE FOR ROBERTS A VOTE AGAINST UTAH were every other objection to his candidacy removed I 1 could not therefore cast my ballot tor for B D 11 roberts and whether his supporters realize it or not a vote tor for the democratic candidate Is a vote against utah against her progress ss against her vital interests a vote to invite further persecution of the mormon people now I 1 hope that I 1 am understood on this question I 1 would like every voter here when he gets home tonight to reflect upon the situation and decide for himself what substantial benefit can possibly accrue to the people ot of the state through the election of B D H roberts another thing I 1 desire to allude to in my contact with tho the people I 1 have found in some quarters an impression that the dominant church has in some way committed itself to the candidacy of the democratic nominee i and that the th adherents of that church would stultify themselves it they voted against him in other words that a vote against roberts Is a vote against principle a vote against the church nut but such cannot be the case bee because a use the question 0 polygamy Is not on trial that fight tight has been fought long ag ago 0 and was settled by the manifesto and if the tile principle promulgated by the recent manifesto of the church with reference to church discipline la Is meant a vote for roberts tor for congress is no vindication ot of that principle as the state and church are absolutely separate so declared by the Cona constitution titu and no man mail has a right to seek for vindication of a religious principle princile P le through the rages of the people of the state the state and church are utterly dis associated and it Is declared in the constitution that they shall ever remain so go LET US HAVE PEA PEACE cr oto o to vote tor for the democratic
