This was the sentiment of the council and the motion waa not acted upon. L. IL lihodea, who was present on behalf of the Jarvia-Conklu- i Railway company said that tha time allowed tha company to lav tracks on Wall atree would expire the hrst of the year. He said that it had been impossible to get the track down up to date and asked, since the Jarvis-Conkli- n company is in earnest about having the line in running order very soon, that the time for the laying of the Wall street track be extended. by motion of Mr. Shilling tha time was extended sixty days. Inquiry waa aim made concerning the connection of tbe company with the Ogden bridge. Mr. Rhodes said he had searched the company's archives but could not find a contract with tbe city, although be did find some understanding by which the company secured s of the bridge. Tbe mayor informed him that a copy of tbe contract was with tbe recorder. The possession of three-eightof the bridge waa assured. The Jarvis-Conklicompany, said Mr. Rhodes, is ready to pay its part of the expense at any time, and further that it does cot believe that the contract concerning the erection of the bridge is being pushed aa fast as it might be. Either Mr. Gilbert or Mr. Rhodes desire to go with the committee designated upon its visit of investigation to the bridge. As one of the proprietors of the bridge, such a natural right was accorded. The ordinance in regard to the pro posed American District Telegraph system in Ogden came up for second reading. It was laid over for a third reading next week. The Ogden Volunteer Iloee company requested nerminaion to use the room in the second story, southeast corner of tbe Uily ball, to be ueen as a sleeping apartment by two of the volunteer Chief Rhodes attached his in dorsement to tbe petition, saying that if the two hoseraen slept there it would give him two extra men for night fires, which he very much needed. A. sion to Lamport petitioned for permiserect a bill board on the City hall square and Tabernacle square for the use of tbe new Opera house. Referred ,to committee on public grounds with power to act. An ordinnnce was read creating the position of fire warden and defining his tluty to be the proper enforcing of all, ordinances concerning lire. Mr. Hurlbut moved to fix the salary of the position, by ordinance, at t25. Mr. Corey moved that Mr. Hurlbut's clause, be stricken out. Mr. Corey's motion was carried. The ordinance per original was then adopted. Mr. Whalen moved that a salary of $25 be attached. The motion was adopted. Mr. Hurlbut nominated John F. Collins for the position. There were no other applicants and Mr. Collins waa elected. The committee on water in regard to the request of J. S. Lewie to have a portion of water licenses refunded, reported that 25 should be refunded; and in regard to Mrs. Reynold's petition that 97.56 be refunded to her on account of the double paying of the water license, ' that the money be paid. of A. O. i In regard to the petition (iibson and P. Anderson to cut a ditch from Ogden river, tbe committee on public works reported adversely. The committee on public buildings reported to allow the Liberal band the privilege of using the City hall for practice purposes, providing that the band members refrain from spitting or throwing cigar butts on the door. Mr. Schilling thought that neither the City band nor Liberal band should be allowed to practice in the rooms which are used as a school for young ladies. He moved that the committee's report be so amended as to allow the bands the privilege only up to the first of the year, after which time both will have to hustle for new quarters. The motion was adopted. A communication of M. Lewis, sanitary inspector to the health office, was read, jt reported that the recent small epidemic of diphtheria was at an end. Of the five cases in Ogden and the two at Five Points, only one case now exists. The rest have been cured. The quarantine has been raised except in the one remaining case, and it will probably be raised today after thorough fumigation. Mayor Kiesel raised the question about the completion of the Ogden river bridge. He said the river was rising and unless the bridge is finished, it will be only a question of a very short time when communication with the opposite bank will be cut off. The city engineer reported that the work had been delayed by reason of a lack of rock, but that the bridge had already been shipped from Toledo. It was moved and carried that the committee on public works wait upon Mr. John Hedderman, who has the contract for putting in the abutments, that they learn what chances there are for a speedy completion of the piers and report at the next meeting. A long list of claims were read and allowed. . three-eighth- n U. P.
