Asiiby, a railroad man since he was 2u and in the service of the Union Pac.fic Railroad Com-pauy Com-pauy for 34 years, today was elected president of the Union Pacific, fie will succeed William , M. Jefl'ers, president of the Union Pacific since October 1, 1937, on ilr. Jefl'ers' retirement February 1, 1046. Mr. Jet't'ers will continue as a member of the Board of Directors of the Union Pacific and active in its affairs. ! Announcement of Mr. Ashby's election was made by F. W. Char-ske, Char-ske, chairman of the executive I committee, following a meeting 'of the Board of Directors today. 'His announcement reads: i "William M. Jefl'ers, who has ' been president of the Union Pacific Paci-fic Railroad Company and its system sys-tem companies since October 1, 1937, will attain the age of 70 years on anuary 2, 1946, and has expressed the very definite wish to retire from the presidency February 1, 194G, under the company's com-pany's retirement rule. He entered railroad service in January, 190G, and became 'associated with the Cuion Pacific in its engineering department in 1911. lie served "in various departments de-partments in the Union Pacific from 1911 to 1934 when he was made assistant to the executive vice president. He became assistant assist-ant to the president of the Union Pacific in 19 37. Tie was elected a vice president on August 1, 1941, and executive vice president presi-dent December 1, 1944. Mr. Jeffers contribution to the Union Pacific and to his country is well known. He has been with the Union Pacific since June, 1890, serving as call boy, clerk, time keeper, foreman, telegrapher, tele-grapher, train dispatcher, chief dispatcher, superintendent, general gen-eral superintendent, general manager, man-ager, operating vice president and executive vice president before be-fore his election to the presidency in 1937.
