Show School Head Speaks at Defense Meet A defense meeting for Smith-field Smith-field people was held Monday evening in the Library building under the direct-ion of Mayor Glen R. Winn. Dr. Allan Bateman, nuperin-tendent nuperin-tendent of the Locan City Schools; Superintendent J. W. Kirkbride and County Attorney L. E. Nelson, were the speakers. Music was furnished by Professor Pro-fessor Otte and his group of young musicians and by three taknted singers, Misses Barbara W'inn, Catherine Roskelley, and Lila Alfred, accompanied by Iva Lou Pilkington. Dr. Bateman said we must buy more and more war saving stamps and bonds and put forth every effort we can to help win this war. Among other things he pionted out was we should let those at the head of our government and army and navy have time to work out the plans for an offensive, of-fensive, not jump in too strong now and loose more than we have already lost. We should be bet ter prepared anr1 when we start we can go all the way fcr . the. victory we must obtain. And to better do this he said, was to let labor and the Contractors alone as far as profits were concerned, We all know that there has been some waste and there will be more, but all of this can not be stopped and have production going full speed ahead. He stated that the cost plus contract system sys-tem was a sure and fast way to have building completed. He also told of how and why we must send more and more planes, tanks guns and other war materials to our allied nations. na-tions. With out the aid of Russia the war picture would look much different, he concluded. Mr. Kirkbride explained . the workings of our State, County and City defense organization and how all could help in case of an air raid. Mr. Nelson said that the county defense council is holding regular regu-lar meetings each Monday evening even-ing in the Logan-Cache Fire station, and it is their desire to have members of their group meet with all defense groups in every city and town in the valley. One other thing he made comment com-ment on was that ws should not be led to think that Cache Valley Val-ley will not witness an air raid or other measn of sabotage. It could happen here and every one should be ready to do their part. Another meeting will be called in the near future, Mayor Winn announced. |
