Show Page 10 Wednesday, February 22, 1978 Folksinger At U 24 HOUR SERVICE FOR ALL YOUR DRY CLEANING Nl Metropolitan Laundry & Dry Cleaners Mt. Air Mall 649-7272 Michael Cooney, a one-man one-man folk festival, will be appearing ap-pearing in concert Friday, March 3, at the University of Utah Art and Architecture Auditorium. The concert is produced by ASUU Programs, The Corkroom Coffee House, and a Few Friends. Michael Cooney is one of the most unique musicians one is likely to find. He sings traditional American and British folksongs, ballads, blues, sea songs, ragtime and novelty, topical songs, and very many others. He plays the banjo, fretless banjo, ban-jo, guitar, 12-string guitar, concertina, and harmonica, kazoo, and various other small instruments. Cooney also has the reputation for knowing hundreds of songs, and can sing for over two weeks without repeating a song. It becomes obvious in his performance that he loves his music. Critics around the country applaude his ability to create a well-paced carefree, happy concert. He can turn a whole auditorium into a livingroom. Michael Cooney was born in California in 1943, but was raised in Tuscon, Arizona. His interest in real folk music increased with his dislike of "show biz" and he left home at 18. He has been on the road pretty much since sin-ce then. Cooney has been on such T.V. shows as Sesame Street and the Today Show. He has also appeared on 10 L.P. records of one sort or another including his own records on Folk Legacy Records and Andy's Front Hall. He is also Vice President, an associate editor, and writes for Sing Out, America's only major folk song magazine. The concert is at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $2.50 U of U card and $3 general, available at the door. The Art and Architecture Ar-chitecture Auditorium is located in the Art and Architecture Ar-chitecture Center on the U of U campus. The crowd who turned up to watch Tom Waits had obviously lost no sleep over the Big Decision they were Fans. Visually, Waits looks like someone you might stumble over if you are inclined to walk along gutters in seedy neighborhoods. Sleazy dark suit with shiny spots, limp tie hanging loosely around limp neck, a felt hat which was pushed around a lot as a youth and has seen a lot of miles, and a case of five o'clock shadow that looks congential. Waits ambles onto the stage, perpetual cigarette hanging from his wide mouth, and says, "I'd like to tell you a little story..." which he handles as if the audience were collectively a person in a bar that just might be interested in exchanging a drink for a colorful story. He proceeds to "spend the facts of his life like small change on strangers." The man is a poet his songstories ramble on, seemingly at random, but each song is a masterpiece, master-piece, evoking strange and nostalgic stirrings from all of us who have ever loved and lost or loved and won and called it a draw. His lyrics are tight and brilliant, inspring and humorous, full of tenderness and pathos, and mostly incomprehensible. incom-prehensible. Those who love his first albums must miss hearing him sing like he used to, but the man has moved on. Staying with the story is often difficult due to Wait's style. He howls, he whines, he talks, he moans, he groans, he slurs, he stumbles with the blues, but he doesn't often enunciate. But the feeling of the story still comes across, so if the listener wearies of trying to follow the story line and gives in to going with the flow, he still gets his money's worth. The back-up group was excellent (including saxaphone, bass, drums, and zxylophone) and combined with Waits back-street gravelly voice and fairy-like fingers on the piano, one could almost do without lyrics, which is a shame because the man sure knows how to tell a story. In all (aside from some sound hassles which Waits wrote off as one of the technical bugs that always 1 plague! institutes of , 'higher ' lparpiHg'j the concert was a delight, warranting a rousing standing ovation from all but Steakhouse, who was passed out due to too much home brew. Considering Con-sidering the competition, there was a good-sized crowd. At the end of the evening, there was a smug crowd. 12 BEIBR iPARKCIWCO-OP LISTING These are the brokerages qualified to help you in Park City 1 I 1M1M I Tr-? -r - " I i NEAR COMPLETION - new 3 bdrm.
