The Park City School Board, at last- Tuesday's meeting, appointed Mel Fletcher to fill a board vacancy created by the resignation of Fay T. Dearden. In addition, it was decided that a special committee, rather than popular vote, would elect the next fire chief, who will take office upon the retirement of Chief Tom Sullivan around the first of the year. This committee will consist of the existing chief, a representative representa-tive from the department, a representative from the State Fire Marshall's Office and the three board members. mem-bers. The new chief will be chosen from the current firefighting force. The department also decided not to opt for a salaried chief. The major reasons for opposition, according ac-cording to Commissioner Tom Shellenberger, were finances. He said if building costs for construction of the fire house addition exceed projections, the budget does not contain contingency funds. According to the new board member, he also had strong urgings from people within the district who thought he "had enough attributes to do a good, responsible job." "I've put lots of time and energy into kids and I pride myself on that," stated Fletcher. The appointed board member mem-ber admitted he was "new at the game." ' Fletcher lists his district concerns as: 1. Money in light of new tax information. 2. The creation of a new grade school. 3. An auditorium for the new high school. "The quality of education in Park City is good," said Fletcher. "But from public contact I feel there are some teaching inequities which could be corrected." Fletcher Flet-cher added that school curriculum, in some cases, could benefit from expansion. expan-sion. Born and raised in Park City, Fletcher has continually contin-ually worked with youth programs. He initiated early ski school programs for children and organized the first Park City little league teams.
