Why would an editor-in- chief for a Minnesota pub- lishing firm and his attractive wife purchase a delicatessen in a , Utah ski town? "Why not?" is the instant anyalytical reply. , Jere and Bonnie , Calmes arrived in Park City last March fully intending to be only residents, not local business people. But a long-supressed desire to be restaurant owners has transformed trans-formed Jere's world into one of books and Boursin while Bonnie has foresaken a Chamber of Commerce desk for a sandwich counter., , . Surmizing that "the time was right" as well as the place, the young couple recently purchased the Corner Store from brothers Mike and Jim Doilney. The Douney'fcfouoedstind operated oper-ated ttpoyttfe Resort eatery for two years before divesting. ; Jere and Bonnie plan to make the Comer Store "truly a delicatessen and cheese shop" where one can select from quaty fare and "take it easy" with ease. Knowing their product and location will make for busy days and hungry crowds, the new owners say they will make sure "the eighth and ninth persons in line stay in line we're going to keep them happy." Jere, described in . one breath by a trade publication as Vowlish" and "cherubic," Ten! Hughes and Her Mare Among Top Ten in Grand National Competition Among horse lovers, when along comes the chilly fall of October,, it is not that glorious time of home run sluggers and diving leaps at line drives in the World Series, but rather it is that glorious time of the Grand Nationals, when the best horses in the East meet the best from the West. It, too, finalizes a long and rugged season that began back in the spring, in April. It, too, produces a champion, a runner-up called the reserve champion, and a top ten. The season consists of a circuit of local and regional hows that serve more or less as qualifying rounds for the Grand Nationals. Place first in a Class A or Regional Championship and you can go; But considering the expense and the competition once there, you'd best win more than one such event. Only the proven .best each year arrive at the Grand Nationals. Toni Huges knew that she'd been reading and dreaming about the Grand Nationals for a long time. Toni Huges lives with her husband, children and assor Bonnie and J ere vuue. - editor-in-chief .of the economics and business text . division of the West Publishing Company and w formeriy employed by CBS- When he accepted his position with West it was with the. understanding that he could abandon Chicago and live anywhere he wished. He and Bonnie chose Salt Lake City for its proximity to the mountains but then decided it was "so close but yet so iar" and opted for Park City, the scene of earlier ski vacations. Jere will have to sandwich his deli delvings in between business trips since his publishing job demand that 8 0 percent of his time be spent on the road. To fill the void, Tim Conville has been hired to manage the Comer Btereriuded ""toy Bonnier a e ;V'5i Writ rr. u Oat ommerce employee Curiously; Jere and Tim had worked together 10 years ago and crossed paths here quite accidentally. Sharing the financial burden burd-en of the enterprise are partners Walter and Dixie Bishop who lived in Burns- ville, Minn. ' "We're trying to lure them out here," Jere remarked, "and it may just happen." Relating business in particular part-icular to business in general, Jere revealed that he is extremely optimistic about Park City's future. "We weren't apprehensive ted ranch animals (one of the sheep nibbled affectionately at this reporter's down vest at he spoke with and watched Toni comb down . Triton Easter Dolly) out off Old Ranch Road in Snyderville. All her life she's been riding horses, bareback, aboard . Western saddles, or atop an English saddle, which she took up eight years ago for the "challenge." Recently, at the Fourth Grand National Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma City, that challenge, chall-enge, that lifelong devotion to horses, paid off. It paid off not in money, but pride, self-satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment. Triton Easter Dolly, a three year old mare bought by Toni last year in California, arrived in Oklahoma City along with more than 59) Morgan horses. "She's a hot horse," Toni told us, "which means she has a lot of spirit, holds her head high and has good action." Good action means picking up those front legs highVlt's what Grand National judges look for. And, in Triton Easter Dolly they found it, for Toni and her mare left having placed Place about getting into business here but things are going even better than expected." As for Park City as a place to live in, Jere unabashedly quotes the song lyric which goes, "Coming home to a place I've never lived before." "It's just really a neat town," he adds. Sporting a menu that has not been marked up one iota since last season, the Corner Store will be open from 8 a.m. until "7:30 or B ." Breakfast offerings include omelettes, bagels, donuts (from the new donut window) and assorted pastries. Lunchgoers can choose from 8 .famous sandwiches, two salads, a variety of cheeses and those enticing hamburgers from the outdoor out-door grill. The "Double Jack" will be aFapres skf TrMrcdniis'tmg' ''ffanTjbT crackers and a beer for only one dollar. Hot chocolate and brownies wil) also be available after a day on the boards. Sandwiches wil) be the supper mainstay and all your breakfast, lunch and dinner desires can be ordered "to go. Manifesting the dichotomy of asperations harbored by so many local business people, Jere observed, "This is a fantastic place to work, live and be. I don't want it to get any bigger, but on the other hand, I want all the people in the world to stop at the deli." in the top ten in performance for 3 year old English Pleasure horses. It turned out a very happy ending to a quite successful season. The two of them never placed lower than third all year, having shown in Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, California and Colorado, placed first at the Utah State Fair, and, competing against mares of all ages, received High Point honors in the Rocky Mountain Morgan Horse Club for English Performance Horses. "She's the best horse I've ever had," Toni told us. "Most horses, you know, don't like human beings, but my mare'd rather be with people than alone. She's on stage all the time. C'mon show him what you can do," she said to the horse. Triton Easter Dolly then kissed Toni Huges. The two have many years ahead and one of these years they may just return from the Grand Nationals as champions. It would certainly complete the dream, something not every-. one can accomplish.
