Tim Matheson, the frat leader of "Animal House", plays a young ad man who marries his longtime long-time lover (Kate Capson). He's handsome, considerate but with the sexual restraint re-straint of a hamster. And, in spite of his best efforts to be good, his wife finds him in flagrante delicto with another an-other woman, and he must wage an uphill struggle to convince her that "even snakes deserve a second chance." The two leads make an appealing couple, but their affair doesn't have much comic sparkle, and without that the epigrams on life, love and sex thud into the story. The charm is provided by minor characters. Edward Ed-ward Herrman is wonderful as Matheson's pedantic older brother and sounding board, who explains the whole problem as a conflict between be-tween two personalities-Albert personalities-Albert the intelligence and Duke, the libido. And gnomish gnom-ish little Wallace Shawn plays a thrice-married man who feels the pressure from liberated women. ("They walk right up to you. They're the way men used to be!") "A Little Sex" has enough taste not to droll over its subject. But we wish its insights were not so dry. Silent Rage Martial-arts hero Chuck Norris adopts a change of pace in the latest of his popular Grade B flicks. The plot is "Bruce Lee meets Frankenstein" as three doctors doc-tors (Ron Silver, Steven Keats, Bill Finley) who test an experimental super-formula super-formula on a terminally injured psychopath and not only cure him, but create an invulnerable man with a mind that lusts to kill. (Why don't they test these things on Chamber of Commerce presidents?) As the local sheriff, Norris prefers to use the two-fisted approach on local criminals, and only whips out his Eastern skills to beat up a passing motorcycle gang if It ' 1 i J i , " ' if iff. t't V-'' , Hit If 1 i f I 1 i i w ' ' it I 4 IJi .0 f- ' :--Z ,x Depressed by his return to civilian life, former P.O.W. Richard Pryor is helped by Margot Kidder, as a high-class hooker with wit and style, in adjusting to the real world in Paramount Pictures' "Some Kind of Hero." and to face the psycho in a final duel. (Brian Libby raises the film a bit above average with his simian, creepy performance as the maniac.) The film deserves a note for passing by the usual Norris formula of fights every 20 minutes, and playing up the elements like atmosphere (in the dark, tubular lab corridors) and a relaxed love affair with Norris and petite actress Toni Kalem. Some Kind of Hero It's certainly another kind of Richard Pryor a dramatic drama-tic role with the slap-happy sequences sprinkled in to appeal to his regular audience. audi-ence. As Corporal Eddie Keller, a soldier adjusting to civilian life after six years in a North Vietnamese POW camp, Pryor draws attention to the real problem of the Vietnam vet. But the plot, based on today's headlines, relies too much on TV-movie melodrama. The returned Eddie finds that (a) his wife has fallen for another man, (b) his From the land of Zorba These recipes were used by T.T. Tillie on her radio show during the week of March 29 through April 2. T.T. Tillie's Gourmet Tips can be heard Monday through Friday at noon and 6 p.m. on KPCW. Turn on your Bazooka music, and crack open the Retsina Wine, because this week we're trying Greek recipes. AVGOLEMONO SOUPPA for 6 people 8 cups chicken stock J cup uncooked rice 3 medium-sized eggs - separated sep-arated 1 teaspoon water Juice of 1 or 2 lemons Simmer the chicken stock and the rice covered until the rice is tender, about 20 minutes. In a bowl, beat the egg whites and water with a whisk or an electric mixer until they peak. Then add the egg yolks and beat about 5 minutes longer until the eggs are fluffy and light yellow. Gradually pour in the lemon juice and mix well. Then very slowly, add about Vi to 34 cup of the stock to the egg mixture beating constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling. Then pour this egg mixture into the soup stirring constantly. DO NOT BOIL. Taste it. You may want to add more lemon juice. Garnish with very thinly sliced lemons and serve it immediately. DOLMATHES (stuffed grape leaves) 2 cups finely chopped onions cup rice ft cup olive oil mother, played with mute saintliness by Olivia Cole-has Cole-has been hit with a stroke and consequent high medical bills, and (c) his G.I. benefits are cut off, because while imprisoned, he signed a war-crimes confession to get help for a critically ill buddy (Ray Sharkey). His only hope is a sassy high-class hooker (a nicely laid-back Margot Kidder) but their affair hits rough spots because be-cause of his pride and hangups about her profession. profes-sion. Turning to robbery, he grabs a large haul but must then save himself and his money from the Mob. None of these cliches seem to address the real problems of isolation, guilt, or culture shock. Some of the movie's shots at public callousness are accurate. (When Pryor tells a welcoming home crowd he could kiss the ground, he's coaxed into actually doing it for the TV cameras.) . He is convincing as both the sadsack and the struggling strugg-ling hero. (The heavy dramatic dra-matic moments . aren't as good as the way Pryor 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 2 tablespoons chopped dill Y4 cup pine nuts Yi cup currants 1 cup finely minced lamb, (optional) 30 grape leaves ( these come canned and should be placed briefly in hot water) Mix all ingredients together and place about 2 teaspoons on the broad end of the grape leaf. Fold over the sides then roll to the end placing the end side down on a greased baking dish. Be sure not to roll too tightly because the rice will swell. Cover the Dolmathes with 2 cups water or stock and place a plate over them all to weigh them down, and cook at 250 degrees for IV2 hours. Serve them chilled as an appetizer ap-petizer or hors d'oeuvres. CAPAMA Serves about 4 people. Use a few pieces at a time so they brown evenly. Saute the onions until soft. Return all the chicken to the Dutch oven. Mix together all savors his first stick of gum in six years.) But the script never shows how the goof and the hero are the same guy. One minute Pryor is flubbing an attempt at bank robbery with a squirt gun. (He embarasses himself by firing it into his pants.) The next, he's beating up two syndicate hoods. Maybe here the title should be, "What kind of hero?" Swamp Thing This is good for what it aspires to be a clean comicbook comic-book adventure with fairytale fairy-tale overtones. Scientist Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) is working in the swamp on a hardy plant strain, but finds himself turned into a hardy plant instead. When the arch-villain Arcane (Louis Jourdan) and his thugs invade the lab, an accident with his growth formula sets Holland aflame and he staggers into the swamp waters.. Slice the lemon rinds and throw in for flavor. Remove, along with the backs and necks, before serving. Stew over medium heat for 1 hour. Meanwhile, cook up the macaroni. Drain and toss in butter. Place the macaroni in a nice large casserole or baking dish. Spoon the chicken on top and pour over the sauce and serve. MOUSSAKA I large eggplant 1 pound ground lamb, crumbled cup olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 clove of garlic, minced y4 teaspoon cinnamon 18 teaspoon each nutmeg and white pepper y4 teaspoon crumpled oregano y4 cup chopped parsley 2 tablespoons tomato paste '2 cup dry red wine or beef with throbbing veins and biceps, who keeps busy rescuing female secret agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barb-eau) Barb-eau) from the heavies. This is a full-time job: the same chase happens about five times. Stupid, yes! But there's something rather guileless about its commitment to the Beauty-and-the Beast romance, ro-mance, and the "damn-the-plot-full-speed-ahead' ' action. There are even a few moments to give kids the willies in old-Disney fashion. The plant formula, when swallowed, brings out a person's true nature. When one of Arcane's hulking henchmen swigs it, he suffers a shrieKing meltdown into a slimy, rodentoid, dwarf. This one is a contender for Best Bad Movie honors. Now playing: At the Holiday Village : : Clariots of Fire On Golden Pond New - Savannah Smiles Coming to Heber: Cannery Row broth cup shredded parmesan cheese Prepare the eggplant : slice in half lengthwise then slice in V2-inch slices. Lay them out on paper towels and sprinkle with salt and let stand while you prepare the meat. Now cook the lamb and onions in a large frying pan with 1 tablespoon of oil, stirring until brown and onions are tenaer. Spoon off all the excess fat if you need to. Add the garlic, cinnamon, salt and pepper, nutmeg, white pepper, parsley, oregano, oreg-ano, tomato paste, and wine or broth - everything but the cheese and eggplant. The dish is then assembled assem-bled sort of like a lasagna. Half the eggplant goes on the bottom of a baking dish or large casserole. Top with the meat sauce and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese. Layer the eggplant and sprinkle with some more cheese. The last step: the cream sauce. Make a roux of 2 tablespoons of butter melted in a saucepan mixed with 2 tablespoons of flour. Throw in a dash of nutmeg and a dash of white pepper. Lower the heat and add 2 cups of milk a little at a time stirring constantly. Then mix together 2 eggs and 1 egg yolk and slowly add to the milk mixture. Continue stirring. Pour this cream sauce over the layered eggplant and lamb and bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 minutes. |
