Show t Page 6 Wednesday, December 29, 1976 aster to Fdstair tapped Timing M When and if any gate racing surface collects itself up on the resort's inclines this year, the Park City Nastar (National Standard Race) . will be ready to again allow skiers of all abilities a chance to realize their Franz Klam- mer fantasies. ' Each enough-snow-on-the-j;round Wednesday and Saturday Sat-urday afternoon a two-tone-one color gate in, the other color out course will be . planted on the lower run off Payday specially cut for, and naied Nastar. First down it . will go the course creator, Mark Green, or another expert and certified pacesetter; pacesett-er; then, any skier who cares to, who has that morning signed in . and paid three bucks for a numbered (just like the big time) bib, can, with allowances (just like the ponies get) for age and gender, try to compare gold; silver or bronze-wise with the , pacesetter's time. The number one pacesetter and overseer of the year's Nastar races will be,as we've said, Mark Green. But to break the monotony and save some wear and tear on Green's knees, some days you'll be racing against the time of Jim Totora, other days against the likes of John Carpenter, and on still others you'll perhaps get the chance to do what few can: beat Stein Eriksen. A few changes in the ad frustration of the races . have been made for the coming (?) season, changes that will, Green and Totora both hope, give the Park City program a higher national Jim Totora ranking.Last year's ranking, other slopes. 221 MAIN ST 649-8337 Natural Foods due to confusion with sign-ups and money paid up at the starting gate, among other things, was low. So this year, in the person of Andrea Altman, everything that need be, will be administered before the skier even arrives at the Payday lift line. 1 Between 8 s and 11 a.m. Andrea will be in the Information booth in the middle of the resort plaza taking Nastar sign-ups and distributing bibs. At noon Mark Green and his assistant assist-ant for the day will set the pace and finish tidying the course and get back to the start by 12:30 sharp, when the race begins. The day's racers must check-in at the finish area first come first served (and you do want to be in that pre-rutted first groupj-and then take the ride up to race the gates. Chief timer for Nastar this year is Bob iieclerc, who has devised a new, far less cumbersome, far less costly timing system. It is a system that employs walkie-talkies and radio frequencies, opposed oppos-ed to the use of cables in the past. The cost factor provides two entirely separate alternate alter-nate sets of timing equipment. equip-ment. Last year no alternate equipment existed, thus, when an out-of:control racer came crashing into the finish gate apparatus, nothing other than hand-timing could be done. The walkie-talkies are moved with infinitely less hassle, too, and can time to hundreths enter timed dual town and employe races on on the other hand ain Street 405 11:30-6:00 SALE 1 0 off all merchandise Friday, Dec. 31st only RECORDS $3.99 : (- - RUSTY DISCO INVITES YOU New Year's Eve Dinner & Party SERVING: Filet Mlngon & Chicken Cordon Bleu $10.00per person DINNER SERVED BETWEEN 8 & 1 0 P.M. Miller High Life Bartenders Cup, the Mid-West Collegiate Collegi-ate Ski Association Winter Carnival and the Equitable Life Insurance Family Challenge, to name only a few, will be run by Totora and timer Leclerc. Totora is especially excited ' about the improved capabilities capabil-ities for town (probably one every three weeks) and resort employe races. "Last year," he told the Newspaper, "the town was really enthusiastic . about the races, like the one with the built-in bumps down Naildriver. This year we hope we can have more." His eyes excite as he speaks of the possibility of duplicating duplicat-ing the pro race format, of dual skiers dueling twice, once down each course, the fastest combined time deciding decid-ing the win and the loss. A slalom one time, a giant slalom the next.' Different v slopes for different folks. Perhaps even a race requiring requir-ing a helmet? Even among warm forced' air the arms and legs sprout goose pimples, just thinking about that gold Nastar medal and those other friendly (?) competitions. And thea Totora, with the face daydreams, mentions something about apres race at the Rusty Nail... . We're ready. When will the weather be? Pray, somebody tell.
