In all cases, individuals are asked for their bank account number andor their credit card number," said Carter. People should remember to never, ever give out either their credit card number or their bank account number over the telephone." Other personal numbers, such as social security numbers, should also be guarded. If residents of the county have any question at all about any such calls, they should contact our office before giving out personal numbers or information either over the phone or through the mail, he said. We will be happy to check out the claims for our county residents. Carter said one reported case involved a person asldng individuals to allow them to place money in their personal accounts. The solicitor claims those who participate will have large amounts of money from a foreign country deposited in their account. The money will gain interest, claim the callers, and the interest will be shared with the person allowing the account to be used. I predict that anyone who gives out their account number to such a caller to whom responds by returning a form in the mail will find their bank accounts missing large amounts of he said. Homeowners should make certain they have a contract in writing, the terms are carefully spelled out, and the price firmly agreed upon. There are those who come to an area and promise to do remodeling, painting, roof work, driveway resurfacing, and landscaping. Sometimes they only do part of the job, but collect the money for the work and then leave town, said Carter. Other times, the work has been done, said Carter. Sometimes the work is even quality work but it ends up costing the homeowner five or ten times what it should have or what they think they agreed to pay. Homeowners need to get a good firm bid, and, even if they know the person, they should check out the price with someone who does similar work, he said.
