V !ii very deed Nephi did herself proud yesterday in the manner in which she celebiated the 113th anniversary of our nation's independence. For some unac countable reason the only preparations that were made previous to last Tues-da- y morning were only plans and talk, but after that time the dispatch with which things were made ready startled everybody. On the approach of the daylight of last Thursday morning, a red letter day tor Nephi and one that will be long remembered, everybody and everything was in readiness and it was evident that the committees arduous labors had not been in vain, but were to Fe crowned with every success, 'lhe firing of the guns and playing of patriotic music by Dartons Coinet Band, which Jbanfl by the way is regaining some ol its lost enthusiasm and is improving nicely, enthused the' citizens and a genuine feel-in- g of patriotism pervaded the town. At 9 a. m. citizens on foot and in carriages gath ered to w itness the parade and the magnificent floats began to gather. The .marshal of the day, C, Andrews, and his two aids, J. R. Hickman and Steve Ostler in very short order made up and started the procession. The parade proceeded from the Court House south to Howards corner, thence east to Booths .corner, thence north to Hagues corner, thence east to McCunes corner, thence north to Mynders corner, thence west to Main Street, thence uorth the meeting bouse, dispensing at Hoyts grove. Too bigh words of praise cannot be said ol the procession nor of those who took part, It was rich, grand and gorgeous in the extreme and would have times the . alone credit to a city of many of Nephi. population The parade was as follows' First division, Duttons Cornet Band on loot; City Officials in Goldbroughs hack most neatly decorated with red, white and blue; County Officials in decorated buggy; and speakers the same Second division; Mammoth and gorgeous car of state bearing, in all her queenly grace, beauty, the Goddess of Liberty, Mrs-E-. B Bryan, surrounded by a bevy of beautiful young ladies representing the thirteen original colonies; several couples on horseback, followed by an elegantly decorated car of state m which appeared the beautful Miss Lena Schroder, neatly and artistically attired, representing Utah. Miss Schroders appearance was so queenly and grand that it seemed art vied with nature to complete f n -- 1 L oiaiM floats of many of the various trades, professions and merchants of Nephi and in the get up and display of each the best of taste had been brought to hear and care nor means had not been spared. This division was a most imposing and beautiful one. They appeared in the following order. The Ensign with the typos, pressman and devil all busy at woik, and the sanctum boss, with his quill, paste pot and shears by his side calmly enjoying the affair and "taking notes, Hyde and Whitmoies magnificent spread w ith the clerks flinging candy after which the childien scrambled most eagerly; Read & Bryans grand float, lichly trimmed and well filled with showy goods; f. C. Ostler & Sons, most beautiful, with the men at woik; Cazier Bros, the "Klothiers not a whit behind any; Cooper & Pypers with the hammers ringing, tinware shining and flying; VV. H. Gages "City Liquor Store a veritable refreshment parlor on wheels with a distributing lager to the dispenser thirsty; Adams & Sons, a beautiful house constructed of doors, sash windows and moulding, most grand. Hanson's water wagon, profusely decoi-atefilled with sparkling and cold distributing to the thirsty free water; C. Andrews &. Co with bales of wool and pelts; Rabbit Valley a band of wool growers from the south on a huge load of wool. The fourth division, consisted of cowboys, antiques and horribles, well lepiesented and making great fun with their wild and amusing f leaks. d, ac-qu- a, Mot-mon- s, at tiie grove. Immediatly after dispeising of the procession an immense throng gathered here. .On the stand weie the chairman, Judge Foote, the committee, choir, God-es- t of Liberty, Mrs. Brj an, the Representation of Utah, Miss Lena Schroder, the young ladies representing the States and Terr tones, and others. The assembly was called to order and the band rendered a national air. Rev. V. N. P. Dailey, chaplain of the day, offered which the choir rendered after praer All Hail our Countrys Flag." The alter band rendered "Hail Columbia which L.L. Hudson read tire Declaration of Independance m eloquent style Mrs Sarah Ann Andrews followed with a song entitled For All and Forever The Flag of the Free most excellently rendered. The Rev. Dr IIifT was then introduced by the chair. Mr. Iliflf thanked the committee and audience for the compliment paid him by his invitation to speak in Nephi on the celebration of this glorious day. Space and tune forbid the publication of his eloquent speech in this issue. It will appear next week. The speech throughout was loudly applauded and at its close the speaker sat dow 11 amid applauses most loud and prolonged. The band again played and Enoch Bowles sang " file Sword of Bunker Hill. Hon. E. C. Allen was then introduced and delivered a speech on The Relation of the American Citien to American Law a synopsis of which will appear 111 inmnw i wii wmr our columns next week. The national hymn "Ameiica was sung by the choir and benediction by the chaplain closed the exercises.
