Bunker, founder of graphonanalysis, in his book, How Writers Tick, answers today's question very wclL The question: Could you tell from the brief sample I am furnishing in this letter what ,ny talents would be as a short aiory author? Someone once remarked that writing is 95 applying the scat of the pants to the scat of the chair and 5 ability. In Dr Bunker's book, he examines the writing of a num-oc-r of authors who established uiemseives professionally in a1 .anety of writing fields. Earle oianiey Gardners writing shows iair ana flourish, reflecting ,:s strong ability for showman-uip- . mere is a wealth of imagination in the writing. Albert ,'aysod Terhunes writing does-,ireveal any imagination, ut instead shows great ability .or factual writing or research. Tibbie Sprague Phillips shows narked talent for rhythmic vriting such as poetry yet she for .vrote romantic novels income. Kate Douglas Wig-;ie (Mrs Wiggs of the Patch) had enthusiasm, an inner sense of the effectiveness of well chosen words and Jeep emotions. In his book, Mr Bunker points out that some writers have outstanding literary ability which translates into an inner drive to write. Producing literary works may be much easier for those essentially talented writers yet others, equally successful at writing, have made names for themselves by dint of hard work and by using some favorable traits of character to develop writing ability. Such writers would have been successful in whatever field of endeavor they had chosen. ln this writing, reader M shows literary tendencies in the formation of the r" throughout the specimen. Coupled with the rhythm which is apparent also, M" has a fine foundation on which to build. Pcrsistcnsc, shown elsewhere in the letter but not strongly, can be developed to where it will provide a valuable aid in helping the writer stay with an idea, work it out and complete it. The writer lacks self confidence and is uncertain of his or her own capabilities. The uncertainty is illustrated by low down t cross bars as in short bottom line. story, Uncertainty, or lack of lasting faith in ones abilities is inhibiting to a long term project such as success in writing certainly is. No matter how remarkable the talent or aptitude found in an individual, if for some reason one constantly underrates oneself the chances of utilizing talent is hindered. Overcoming such hindcranccs can be accomplished only by diligent effort to develop more faith in oneself. James E. Sarlc, 1038 East 5650 Souht, boy. Sept. 19. Delbert N.
