"People are not Interested in coming to a ballroom and dancing anymore. . . . it's worse now than it has ever been, " said Stan Kenton in a recent Down Beat interview. Speculation is all that anyone has about the 'death of the Big Bands; Ralph Flanagan, Jerry Gray, Ray Anthony, et al. No one in Jazz can help but ponder this enigma, if for no other reason than why they are not around anymore. My own ideas, too, are speculative. During the 1950's, jazz went to school ar on the West Coast. This was a wherein jazz musicians studied, discussed, disected their music and applied classical methodology. Graduates from this school include: "Tnird Stream", "Cool", "West Coast", and "Funk". A small combo is a better laboratory for this type of school because of the stress on the individual rather than on the ensemble. so-cal- led study-semin- SHIFT TO NEW TREND It has to be assumed that a good majority of musicians went for tne idea of schools, and so dropped whatever they were doing, in some cases - Big Bands, and "went West". With public attention shifting to the schools, Big Bands found themselves cutting "LP's instead of going on tour. As the demand for bands dropped, so did the supply. Some people speculate that Bands are not dead, while others feel we have Both are valid, to lost Bands for good. a degree, but in an idiom where not only individuality in a combo but a driving ensemble sound is required, we can see the necessity for both. I am then, of the opinion that bands are not dead but Just lowered in public acclaim. In jazz, there Is a need for the Big Band Sound just as much as there is for the 'intimate' sound of a trio or quartet. Will Big Bands make a 'come-back'- ? That, old friend, is another speculation. HOW ABOUT Bicycle pilots are expected to obey both sound traffic practices and the law, the same as any other road user. This is for their safety. This is to help insure a smooth flow of traffic. This is part of proper and orderly sharing of the road by all highway users. This is part of being a good traffic citizen. Last week, I mentioned an excellent leaflet on bicycle safety put out by the Los Angeles Police Department. It would be hignly helpful for our bicycle safety efforts if some service group or public spirited citizen of our.neignborhood would volunteer to underwrite tne sprinting of this leaflet in quantltiy. The leaflet brought out 8 points of safety, which were included in last week's article. Today, we will touch upon these points. Point 1 is OBEY TRAFFIC oruNS AND SIGNALS. Bicyclists operate under the traffic code. Tne same rules apply to a bike as to an automobile. This means a full stop for stop signs. It means obeying traffic lights. It means yielding the right of way to all pedestrians at all times. Point 2 is GIVE PROPER ARM SIGNALS. Many young bicyclists are good in giving correct signals. Older bike riders tend to be careless, as are most automobile drivers. A proper arm signal tells the approaching motorist when you are going to turn, enabling him to stay out of your way. It's safer for you ana more considerate of him when you signal. Point 3 is RIDE ALONE. It's much safer for you and for the passenger. Two boys are in Salt Lake hospitals this week because their overloaded bike was hit by a car. A bicyclist can get a traffic ticket for carrying a passenger. The rule is no more people on a Dike than there are permanent seats. Point 4 is RIDE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE STREET. This, in my is the key rule, and one broken far too frequently in our neighborhood. For reasons, last weex's article which covered this rule quite adequately. Point 5 is DO NOT RIDE ON SIDEWALKS. Since we have so few sidewalks in our neighborhood, this isn't too much of a problem for us. However, it is an important rule. Sidewalks are for pedestrians, not bicyclists. Point 6 Is KEEP BIKE IN GOOD CONDITION. Just as a good motorist has his car lubricated at regular intervals, and gets it inspected periodically, at least every spring, so a bicyclist benefits by regular care. Point 7, LICENSE AND REGISTER BIKE, is required in Salt Lake City, tho not in the County. It is a good rule, one our County should adopt. Point 8 is LIGHTS FOR NIGHT RIDING. This rule is far more Important for your safety than you may realize. An unlighted bike at night is almost Impossible for a motorist or pedestrian to see. This applies any time after sundown. You are endangering your bike and yourself, and you can get a traffic ticket for violating this rule. Next week, I will continue my comments on bike safety. Meanwhile, I urj compliance with these rules by the bicyc riders in your family. re-re- ABOVE: RIGHT: GIVE PROPER ARM SIGNALS. SIGNS AND SIGNALS.
