Mrs McClain was chosen from among seven contestants who were judged on their poise, sincerity, naiuraness, originality and timing. The timing of the speech limited it to a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of seven. Contestants were given 48 hours notice and a choice of three subjects. Judges of the speeches, Margaret Masters of KSL radio, Mrs R. J. Huttcn, Mrs J. Hughes and Mrs J.
