Many emotionally disturbed children can take neither the stress and strain of a full school day, nor separation from parents. Frequently this is the first time that disturbance appears. The earlier these children are detected the better chance there is for .their ultimate adjustment, explained Mrs Plonk.. . Many of the children hare to learn through constant repetition and individaul attention, to perceive the world around them: shapes, collars, direc, tins, etc., things most normal children observe automatically. They, must also learn to reproduce what they perceive,. which helps them later in learning to read and write. In order to give each child the individual care he requires, the Holladay center uses 45 volunteers weekly in addition to its two- full time members, speech therapist.. Three more teachers and a part time' social and different organizations churches. Recently a large group of University of Utah students answered an emergency pica for volunteers. The center is constantly struggling with a deficit. It is operated on a basis, receiving some aid from the state department of public welfare under its day care center program, but the bulk of the budget comes from tuition fees and private contributions. The income is variable, making long ' range planning difficult. In closing the interview, Mrs Plenk said, Please, emphasize that the Center supplies only 'a modicum of the needs of this community.
