Revenue tax delayed The Salt Lake City commission last week voted for 30 days to delay implementation of a six percent revenue tax on companies competing with public utilities, pending a study of an alternative proposal presented by a group of telephone equipment companies. According to Walter R. Miller, deputy city attor- ney, the independent phone companies had proposed that, instead of taxing them to equalize their burden with that of public utilities, the city should simply not tax that aspect of the utility business in which the private and public utilities compete. Miller explained the private companies only provide large-scal- e telephone for businesses. equipment They dont provide home equipment, as the public utilities do. Only telephone companies appear to be affected by the ordiance, scheduled to take effect last Thursday, Sept. 1. The city did not accept the companies proposal Miller said, but felt it had enough merit to warrant investigation. To do that, a delay in implementation of the ordinance was necessary. All companies involved will now study and report to the city on the potential revenue loss if their plan is adopted and the difficulty of segregating, for admin- istrative purposes, that portion of the business which would be for the public utility. |
