According to figures compiled by People Against Redlining, a group of local citizens, city residents receive a small percentage of the home improvement loans approved by the six lenders approving the highest number of loans during the last two years. At American Savings & Loan, city residents received about 36 percent of the improvement loans distributed in the Salt Lake area, while suburb residents received about 64 percent. In contrast, at Valley Bank & Trust, city residents received only three percent of the loans, while residents living in districts with suburb zip codes received 97 percent of the loans. Continental Bank & Trust gave city residents 30 percent of their improvement loans, and First Federal Savings & Loan gave them 34.8 percent. Commercial Security Bank gave city dwellers 14.5 percent of the home on page 16b ed Letters to the Editor what his penalty should be for murder. The jury and the jury alone has made the decision that his penalty should be by Robert Hansen Attorney General-elec- t death. Yes, Utahs Attorney General does represent the State! Parker M. Nielson in his guest column published in the Utah Enterprise Review Dec. 15, 1976, states that public call into statements of the Utah Attorney General-elec- t office. question the legitimacy of his discharge of that Since Mr. Nielson did not set forth the quotation or substance of the statements he refers to, it is very difficult to respond specifically at this time, but I do wish to assure Review readers that I have no intention of misusing this office to further my own personal views of morality where they may not be supported by the laws of Utah. I do believe, however, that law is primarily based on morality and that the moral views of public officials are very germane to their service. Mr. Nielsons criticism of my identifying my opponent murderers as criminal defense counsel for one of the Hi-would be justified absent the fact that this was done under a mistake of fact the fact being that my opponent had advanced his experience in capital cases as being a qualification for being the Attorney General since it was mentioned in a newspaper report of his announcement. Additionally, in September I informed Mr. Athay that I had Mr. Nielson claims he could cite wide ranging examples of my going beyond the proper scope of the Attorney General's office on the subjects of pornography, gun control and abortion but he has not done so. I now challenge him to do so as I deny I have and would like to refute specific charges. I intend to take an active role in all areas of law enforcement. I believe the people elected me to do that. I will not abuse the office or act beyond its scope. If anyone believes I am attempting to do so at any time, I welcome an opportunity for discussion. In fairness, I submit such discussions should come before a media blast rather than afterwards, and would suggest to Mr. Nielson that he his own ethics before he damns mine. ne Fi just learned that I had been under an erroneous impression, explained how it had come about, and offered to publicize my corrected position in any way he wished. He chose not to have me do so and thereafter I did not link him in any way with the i murders. As for the Gary Gilmore case and my stand on capital punishment, Mr. Nielson has falsely accused me of assist(ing) in securing counsel who will advance his death wish and even presenting their legal arguments for them. Mr. Gilmore employed Dennis Boaz as his attorney without any assistance from me. I did aid Mr. Boaz, as I would any attorney who needed such assistance, to find a local attorney who would be willing to work with him in this case since Mr. Boaz could not practice in a Utah state court without such an association. Later without any assistance from me, Mr. Gilmore employed Ronald Stanger to replace Dennis Boaz. I have never advanced any arguments on behalf of either Mr. Boaz or Mr. Stanger. In fact, on Nov. 30, 1976, I told the Board of Pardons at the commutation hearing, Gary Gilmore does not have the right to choose Hi-F- COFFEE FOR FOUR CENTS A CUP IN-OFFI- out-of-sta- te plus a coffee maker and maintenance, free Now you have an alternative to the cafe down the afreet for your coffee, or paying exorbitant retail coffee price for your In office percolator.
