Show The Enterprise Review, September 8, 1976 Page 4b Candidate Marriot States Personal Income On Steady Downward Slide Since the personal income of Utah citizens has fallen, relative to the income of residents of other states. In 1969, Utah ranked number 29 among states in personal income. By 1975 it had fallen to 39, up from 42 where it had sat for the two previous years. In a report from the Bureau of Economic and Business Research of the University of Utah, B. L. 1961 senior research economist, analyzed various methods of indicating the g economic of the state. Among data presented in the report was a Fjeldsted, well-bein- historical view of Utahs rank in personal income, which he considers a reliable indication of economic health. Between 1955 and 1964, the state hovered about the 30th rank, vascillating between 29 and 31. In 1965 it dropped to 34 and continued a downward trend to 42 where it stayed for two years. The 1975 level is the highest it has been since 1971. Fjeldsted noted the relative decline after 1969 was due in large part to the changing industrial mix in the Utah economy. In 1962, he wrote, The three broad sectors with relatively mining, high wage rates construcmanufacturing and tion accounted for more than 34 percent of labor and income in proprietors Utah. Because they are not business people themselves, government officials are not sympathetic to business and the profit motive, the candidate said, adding their programs are often ridden with waste and duplication. They are not familiar with the system and have never been faced with meeting payroll month after month after month. We ought to balance the budget, not just for the sake of balancing the budget, he said, but because it would end inflation. Second in priority according to the candidate . would be to pare the size of federal government and redefine its role. He supports the states assuming more authority from the federal government as well. Thirdly, Marriott would 9 9 reduce taxes, specifically on a progressive income tax scale and a progressive estate tax scale. Tax incentives for business would inspire them to expand and create more jobs, thereby relieving unemployment, he added. Fourth, Marriott would revamp the Social Security system now plagued with problems of an ever swelling number of dependents collecting Social Security benefits. Marriott cited figures that showed the ratio of workers to recipients in 1939 at 150 to 1. At present, he said, the ration is 3 to 1. To the office of the Second Congressional District, Marriott brings 15 years experience in financial and pension consulting.
