Show The National Enterprise , September 8, 1976 Page eleven Survey Shows Stockholder Participation Up Stockholders are starting to receive more information, and more shares are being voted at annual meetings as a result of new SEC requirements and proposals. These are some of the findings of a mail survey assessing corporate reactions to new SEC reporting requirements and proposals, which drew returns from 12 Vi percent of Fortunes 500 companies and 500 randomly selected firms listed on the American Stock Exchange. Conducted by Schorr and Howard Company, public relations firm, the survey drew responses from 125 corporate secretaries showing that: Virtually none said that they would project earnings. An increasing number vs 36) are issuing (38 (1) separate fourth quarter reports. Most companies (90) are presenting their lines of business breakdowns in dollars rather than percentages only. Few requests fered 10-received. K WHY l $ THAT MONSTER ALWAYS AHEAD . that it was pretty bad but I wasnt prepared for it. It was about 12 years ago but its as clear in my mind as And yesterday. People living on the street. Doing everything that living people do right out on the street. That endless sea of humanity with their hollow eyes and diseased bodies. No person can visit Calcutta, India without being affected. Animals that could be eaten walk the streets. It is against certain peoples religion to kill them. Can you imagine how pathetically stupid? Cattle competing with humans for food. Well, one simply has to come to the conclusion that there are enough problems in this world without creating new ones. At best it would be difficult to feed the people of India. Why does man have to invent religious barriers to make things even more difficult? Yet, we do it every day. Every day in this country young girls are getting pregnant. They dont want to be and they didnt think it would happen to them. Now any time the subject comes up in public there is u some person who tells us that God didn't intend for young people to engage in sex. Since they violated Gods law they are getting just what they deserve. This is the same guy who is against sex education in the schools. Not just slightly against it at that. He will vote against any politicians who dare be in favor of it. And so, like the people of India, we continue to ignore the obvious solution to the problem. Its hard for me to believe that full and comprehensive sex education is not offered in all our public schools. not required. Remember that I said offered Its even more hard for me to believe that young girls are not able to get birth control pills with a doctors prescription with or without their parents permission. Why cant a young man buy contraceptives off the shelf at any age? Again, I dont care if he tells his mother or not. The simple fact is that young people will continue to have sexual relations. So why don't we admit the obvious? Why dont we teach them just exactly what can go wrong? said that I was told holier-than-tho- of- reports have been About a third more shares held in the stockholder's own name are voted at annual meetings than those stocks held in street name vs 62), but voting of (81 OF(S fi! y lets show them how to prevent it. Im really not sure where we get our strange ideas. pre-marit- al for sex would ruin our life? I Who dont believe it. Who came up with the strange idea that violence in a movie is OK, but sex should be banned? There are a number of theatres in our city showing films. Of late a number of picketers have gathered in front of these theatres to protest what is going on inside. A conversation with a picketer last week produced the following: movie? Q: Have you ever seen an Picketer: No. Q: Then how do you know you dont like them? Picketer: There are certain things you just know. films? Q: Why are you against Picketer: Because I believe that these films ruin lives the lives of young people. Q: Have you seen any young people going in the X-rat- ed X-rat- X-rat- ed such street name" shares is increasing. This may be due, possibly, to new SEC requirements on distribution of annual Reports. The resistance to projections is no surprise, commented Norman Schorr, president, in light of the widespread opposition to the SEC plan that would have required companies making profit forecasts to meet detailed reporting standards. Outlined originally last year, the SEC plan was withdrawn March 30, 1976 because of the overwhelming opposition. Most interesting, he said, is that an increasing number of firms are breaking out fourth quarter results separately as follows, even though this is not required in interim reports to stockholders: 52 are giving audited or unaudited fourth quarter figures in their annual reports. 38 planned to issue an interim report for the final quarter, up from the previous years 36. Also, the increase in the number of shares voted suggests that the SEC requirement is succeeding in getting voting materials into the hands of stockholders earlier in the process and in time for them to be voted at annual meetings, Schorr said. The Prince Column by John Prince ed theatre? Picketer: No. And so it goes, and it always ends the same way. We are told that if we dont like their standards, why dont we move? To begin with we say, we were born here too, But beyond that, we believe in a very simple approach to life; Let a person do anything he or she wants if they want to and it doesnt hurt another person. Let homosexuals be homosexuals with other homosexuals. Let tired old men go to dirty movies if they wish. Let cigarette smokers smoke to death if they wish. You, of course, have the same right not to breathe their smoke. In short, let's stop pretending that we have some great moral insight. None of us do. There arc enough problems on this earth. Wouldn't it be easier to solve them if we didnt always have to listen to the lectures from the wild people who claim to talk with God? I said that I was in Calcutta about 12 years ago. Well, I was there with my wife two years ago. More people now than ever before. And more cattle. Religion continues to stand in the way of common sense. Partner, Prince, Iinghcinrich & Greer. |
