He attended Liberty elementary and Murray high. A 10311 graduate of Murray, he was an active student at the school being a member of the Tiger Club and the school newspaper staff. In' addition, Major Erickson also sang and was a member of a cast of students who presented an opera at the school. "1 had Varian Mortenson as my principal most of the time I attended school." he recalled "He was principal at Liberty and the same year I started hi'h school, he was appointed principal of the senior high." After receiving his diploma. Major Erickson worked at the Tooele Smelter for about a year before being called Into the service. "I had been a member of the National Guard for three days when my outfit was called in," be noted. "It was G Battery of the 222nd Artillery Battalion and was made up of Murray men." The unit was sent to California for training and were on several manuvers in Washington before the start of World War II The battery was sent overseas to the Pacific Theater in 1942.
