Greenwood Last spring the Utah State Board of Education, through the Superintendent of PulJic Instruction, arranged for the Federal Bureau of Education at Washington, D. C, to conduct a survey of Education in Utah. Dr. John J. Tigert, U. S. Commissioner of Education and a staff of 17 educators of National reputation conducted the survey. In the study of the elementary and secondary schools, the sampling meth od of observation and evaluation was adopted. The districts selected as representative of conditions throughout the State were intensively studied. The following brief extracts and recommendations are taken from the findings of the survey. The population of Utah in 1920 was 98.3 per cent white, of which 85.8 per cent were native born. The remaining 1.7 per cent included 0.G per cent colored, 0.1 per cent Chinese, 0.7 per cent Japanese and less than 0.1 per cent of other nationalities. Nearly 29 per cent of the entire population is engaged in agriculture. The annual value of agriculture including that from livestock on farms and range lands amounts to nearly C5 million dollars. 6.8 per cent of the State's population is engaged in the mining indus try. In 1!)2;$, the mineral production of Utah was fifteenth in rank in the United States, ami the value of this million dolproduction was over lars. Of th; employed population, 22.5 per cent are in manufacturing; 19.4 per cent are employed in transportation or trad; 8.4 pr cnt in public and professional service, and 14 per cent in domestic and ersonal service. 56 per cent of the entire population is under 25 years of age. (In the nation as a whole only 49 per cent of the population is under 25). Utah has a larger per centage of children to total population than any other state in the union. 140,000 people, or 2S jht cent of the South State's are engaged in edEait of Murray near Vine Street CHOICE ACRES. 12 acres near ucationalpopulation, activities. A salary schedule, bxsed on such factors as professional improvement, experience and teaching efficiency should K' adopted. Salaries paid for educational work in Utah are relatively low. Teachers slfould continue to take University work while in the profession. The results of the survey, were, on the whole, complimentary to schools and people of the State, in spite of the fact that many deficiencies were discovered.
