Is it possible its that time agam? Wasnt it just Labor Day a weekend or two ago? The 4th of July was a couple of months ago, right? Okay, I hear you. Ill get a grip. The reality of time passage is so hard for me to get a handle on sometimes. Maybe its just me. Other realities are hard to handle as well. The reality of telechange is an example. As the vision detective Monk says, I have no problem with change, I just dont want to be there when it happens. (Thats the same line that Woody Allen says about death.) Some things just arent supposed to change. The sun rises in the east. The moon waxes and wanes. The North Star is fixed in the northern sky. I drink Slim Fast for breakfast. And, the Red Sox are cursed. (Well, okay -forget that last one.) The fact that The Country Squire exists on Mt. Pleasants Main Street isnt supposed to change either. But that fact is going the way of the Red Sox curse. Its not going to exist anymore. Thats the report I got from Diane there last Saturday. I was at the store doing some of my Christmas shopping as Ive done for quite a number of years. I have always been able to find nice clothing at a nice price there. (Saturday, the close out prices had me buying more items than usual there. I recommend you get over there ASAP.) Circumstances have evolved that nave made the choice to close the store seem like the right thing to do. Going to market for the store has changed from Salt Lake City to Denver. Making that trip three or four times a year isnt very easy. Dianes dad is now in his 90s. The demands on time as a store proprietor compete with important family time. A person can only juggle so much. Plus, and after all 40 years in the business is a full career. A change is as good as rest, and a rest is well deserved at this point. Even so, as much as the closure of the store is justified, I cant help but feel that an important piece of Sanpete-acan- a is being lost. (If, by chance, you didnt get that, the etymology of is a derivative that just now coined word Sanpete-acan- a of Americana.) The loss of a single, independent, small-towdepartment store is a thimble of water taken out of the ocean as far as the big picture of shopping goes in the marketplace of Utah. (Utah IS our marketplace. Right there with me, I see Sanpeters in ProvoOrem and Salt Lake City nearly every time Im up north.) But, in my view, that thimble of water, which is a rural department store, is significant to the heart and soul of what makes Sanpete, Sanpete. Its intimate countty shopping with a long history of service. Its the genuine feeling of the personal touch which the big top of the food chain super stores attempt or pretend to possess. Im not so naive as to think that change is not inevitable - even in Sanpete where some believe that time stands still. I know that some change can be good. Some things though, shouldnt change. Im still going to expect the sun to rise in the east. Im still going to watch the moon wax and wane. Ill continue to look for Polaris in the Sanpete Northern sky, and, Ill still drink Slim Fast for breakfast. But next year, sadly, I wont be Christmas shopping at The Country Squire.
