Show THE 12 Thursday, October 21, 2004 PYRAMID NS girls tennis team places sixth at state ' North team tennis Sanpete girls traveled to St. George to compete in the state 3A tennis championships on Oct. 15 and 16. The team placed sixth overall in a tie with Bear River and Park City. I Ahead of North Sanpete were Pine View in first, Grantsville, second, Dixie, third, Ogden and Judge Memorial, tied at fourth. There were 20 schools represented at the tournament. To place sixth at the state tournament is quite an accomplishment. We are very proud of our players and the way they represent North High Sanpete School, commented Coach Jeff Ericksen. On the first day of action, almost the entire team advanced through to the second round. In first singles Region 8 first seed, Sami Sego, won her match against Hurria Region 9 cane, fourth seed. Sami calmed the jitters and used her senior confidence to finish off her opponent. In second singles Diane Slack, a two seed, faced off against the three seed from Region 9. The freshmen netter from Snow Canyon was fierce after having thousands of dollars in lessons and Diane succumbed to her in the end, ST. GEORGE-T- he 6-- 4, 6-- 4, 6-- 4, 6-- 2. Carlee Earl, Region 8s first seed in third singles, squared off against Cedar City, Region 9 fourth seed, and soundly defeated her, Carlee used her sweet ground stokes and calm nerves in her decisive victory. Heather and Toni Gar-licNorth Sanpetes undefeated first doubles team, faced off against Cedar City, the fourth seed from region nine also. They soudly defeated the 6-- 2, 6-- 3. k, Red-me- 6-- 0, n, 6-- 1. drea and Maria tried their best to lose but it was iust not in their blood. They came back after a second set mishap to win, 6-- 3, 7-- 6 3-- 6, (3). They deserve to win this match. Two seniors who have been putting in the time to be successful won that match! commented Coach Brad Bentley. Second round action proved to be much more difficult for the Lady Hawks. In the second round all players were defeated and finished their season. In first singles Sami Sego lost to Grantsville, Third singles, Carlee Earl lost to Ogden, First doubles Heather and Toni Garlick fought hard but in was an uphill battle against nerves and an intense crowd from both schools. They lost, 64, Andrea and Maria Peel, North Sanpetes second doubles, lost to a talented Ogden duo, The talent level is so high when you get to the state tournament. Most of these girls from larger communities and schools have taken private lessons since they were little girls and their parents have paid thousands of dollars to get them where they are. I am proud of our girls from Sanpete and for the skill level they have reached with limited access and money. Part of the key to our success is the summer tennis program. It is separate from the school but those players that participate have the upper hand over those that aont, commented Coach Jeff Ericksen. The Hawks finished the season sixth place in state, the Region 8 Championship trophy and had a record of 13 wins, two losses. First singles Sami Sego had a record of 14 and five. Diane Slack, second singles, finished with nine 6-- 0, 6-- 1, 6-- 0. 6-- 1. 6-- 3. 6-- 3. 6-- 0, Maria and Andrea Peel, second doubles also faced the fourth seed from Region 9, Canyon View. An wins and eight losses. North Sanpete's awesome girls' tennis team came away with sixth place at the state championships held recently in St. George. Carlee Earl, third singles record was 17 and two. First doubles, Heather and Toni Garlick, suffered only one loss all season and that was to be eliminated from the state tournament. Their record was 18 and one. Andrea and Maria Peel, second doubles, had an equally impressive record with 17 wins and two losses.
