Show Page Two - The Pyramid - December 8, 1999 The Candy Counter and Unique Boutique Merrill Ogden Manners for Christmas Im Lets give each other something for Christmas this year that wont cost any of us a dime. It will make our lives more pleasant and make us feel better about each other. I know it would improve my mental health and perhaps keep me from checking myself into therapy. Im talking about manners and courtesy. (Its "climb on the soapbox time" again.) Its not that Im some high-broetiquette "know it all." It just that I feel that were losing our level of civility in society. (Or maybe my age is starting to show.) If you dont agree with me perhaps my frustration can provide entertainment for you. Heres what sparked the fire this time. This past week I attended two Snow College Music Department events: 1) The Symphonic BandWind Orchestra Concert and 2) Handels Messiah. At both events, there were people who seemed to be clueless as to the level of formality of the occasion. At the concert, I felt like standing up and shouting at what looked like college age students, "Hey you! -- Yeah, you three with your mouths going a mile a minute. Hel-lThis is a concert with live people playing real instruments for a paying audience. Youre not in your apartment with The Backstreet Boys cranked up on the stereo for background music" (By the way, I enjoy much of todays music.) At the Messiah performance, things were a quantum leap worse. I didnt arrive early enough, so I had to sit in the "cheap seats" toward the back of the hall. (The Messiah is free to the public.) We had to move from our first seat selection because the talking of our neighbors was so incessant that it became unbearable. What a bunch of clods! Sad to say, again, most of the offenders were what seemed to be college aged kids, but not exclusively. w o: assuming that many of the students had been assigned to attend these concerts in connection with a class. They were coming in and out of the hall like it was a high school basketball game. From what I observed last Sunday night, I have compiled a short list of what I believe should not be done when attending a concert. 1) When arriving late, dont "klunk" in with your hard heeled shoes across the wooden floor. (I know its been your dream to turn a hundreds heads as you enter a room, but dye your hair green and so it quietly.) 2) Dont wait to get to your seat to make a production of taking off your heavy, nylon, noise-makiwinter coat. (Im impressed with your down-fille- d jacket, but really Id rather take a look at it out in the FG cleanup impresses citizen Dear Editor, foyer.) It was a cold and blustery as I made my daily trip "down town", but as I took time to stop and look around, truly, I was warmed and filled. Main Street for a long time has been on a downhill slide, and I hope it has hit bottom. While I slept, there have been good things happening. President Kimball counseled us several years ago to "clean up, paint up and fix up." Were a little slow responding to his call, but it is happening. What stirred up these thoughts today was to see the first step being taken toward the restoration of the old "show hall." What interesting stories could be told if we could or retell the in this and the old happenings dance hall. I salute and applaud the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for what they have done and are still doing to the old Tithing Office. The same could be said of the old Fountain Green Garage and the Seeley and Whitaker store building across the street. But that isnt all. I look at the many new homes and also the older homes that are having face lifts and yards cleaned and beautified. The number of beautiful homes and gardens in all our communities, is increasing each year. 1 grew up in Fountain Green and remember well when these buildings and businesses were flourishing. The ingredient has been formulated into a product called ARTH-R- x and comes in a strength designed for humans. Researchers are excited and say the formula can relieve arthritis pain for millions. Developed by the Phillips Gulf Coris a breakthrough poration, ARTH-R- x in the treatment of painful disorders ranging from minor aches and pains to more serious conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, tendonitis, backache and more. Although the mechanism by which ARTH-R- x works to relieve pain is not totally clear, scientists suggest that inpam is relieved because ARTH-R- x tercepts the messenger substance that sends pain signals to the brain. ARTH-R- x is available in a convenient roll-o- n applicator without a prescription. According to a spokesperson for the company, due to the overwhelming demand for ARTH-Rx- , supplies are sometimes limited. But that was yesterday! I dont know where or when it started, but Sanpete has had a rebirth and I think it is wonderful. I admire the people in Moroni for their "Scandinavian persistence" in going ahead with the "Olde Opry House. " I see the same kind of things happening in other communities throughout the county. I have been pleased to read about the "Sanpete Craft Corridor." But I have been especially pleased to learn that Fountain Green and Moroni have now been annexed into this corridor. This is as it should be because of the easy access to the Freeway and Fountain Green and Moroni are the first places in Sanpete that many people will see. I think our two communities will be equal to this challenge and opportunity. I have seen the results of this kind of "craft" planning in eastern Tennessee, especially around and the economic Gatlinburg impact in the whole area has been tremendous. Its true we will not likely ever have the numbers of people they have to deal with, but who knows? They had a 100 years head start. 0; Leonardo the scissors. Theyre great places and a lot of fun. But, I know, the teacher didnt assign you to go to the coffee shop.) 4) Dont play "beauty shop." (Braid each others hair before you come to the concert.) 5) Dont play "massage parlor." (Give each other backrubs at home. Its more fun there anyway because you can use hot oil and you dont have to stifle those "mmm" sounds.) 6) Dont mock the conductor or lip sync enthusiastically. (Its annoying and you havent paid your dues by trying out and going to rehearsals.) 7) Dont punch each other and give each other "nuggies." (Save that for the gym.) 8) Five words: "Leave the toddlers home." (Its cruel and unusual punishment to take a little kid to a formal concert and expect them to behave.) Well, I feel better now. Hopefully we can become a little more mannerly during this Christmas time as we attempt to show out love and sensitivity to others...
