A) Council discusses proposed recreation district SPRING CIT- Y- Spring City Council held a meeting on Jan. 7. to discuss a new North Sanpete Recreation area and water services outside city limits. Recreation area The Recreation Committee, with Spring City committee Heather Allred and members Chad Larsen, have been working for about nine months, to establish a district in North Sanpete, to give youth something worthwhile to do. members have Committee purposed fixing up the old high school gym on State Street in Mt. Pleasant. The school board says they already have an offer tor the building, but the committee has asked them to hold off on any decision until they could gather input from cities located in North Sanpete area. Q) Fountain Green Elementary held the National Geographic Geography Bee on Jan. 13. The winner was Jessica Ivie, daughter of Wade and Amy Ivie. She will have a chance to participate in the State Geography Bee. She also received a $25 gift certificate from Moroni Feed Company. Other winners pictured are Bobby Johnson, William McCaffery, Joseph Wright and Ryan Stewart. Other prizes were donated by the Fountain Green General Store, Becks Auto, and Cuz-a-Ew- e. Local man drowns while serving mission ISLAND- S- Jaarl CANARY Michael Papenfuss, 20. the eldest son of Joseph and Heather Lewis Papenfuss. of Fountain Green, was the apparent victim of a drowning accident on Monday, Jan. 18. in the Canary Islands while serving an LDS mission. Elder Papenfuss was reportedly standing on shoreline rocks with five other missionaries to get a closer look and pictures of the incoming waves, wb'a two missionaries were swept into the ocean by an unexpected high wave. Elder Papenfuss jumped in to try and save the other two. One unidentified missionary was able to make it back to shore while Papenfuss and Elder Joshua Montclair, Matthew Prymak. VA. did not. Using helicopters. Spanish officials located the bodies late Tuesday and the remains were recovered early Wednesday morning. Plans are being made to return the bodies to their respective hometowns. Papenfuss and Prymak were serving in the LDS Spain Las Palmas Mission. about getting water service outside city limits. Councilman Neil Sorensen discussed thouehts of annexing Snowmobilers still lost in Aspen Hills property into bpring City to get the tax base and also expressed concern of how many homes outside city limits can the new water system handle A motion was made to supply Lusty with the eight water hookups. Spring City will have the work done and Mr. Lusty will pay the city for materials and labor. The only work that will be done right now will be the eight-inc- h main loop. All individual hook-up- s will be looked at on a case by case basis as needed. Lusty w ill need to provide Spring City with a 25- - foot easement for access and any roads done by Spring City will be done as money is available. Lusty believes that Sanpete County will be putting in the road, Home business the old DUP building roof. At the old cemetery the fence has been moved in on the south corner. The property owner by cemetery will need to be asked to move the fence back. Neil Sorensen asked if the council would support the resource officer. Mayor Allred stated that he would like to hear the details of this from the school district before deciding. State surplus has a sweeper in stock. The council agreed to buy this. nt Mayor update Mayor Allred went to Salt Lake City to talk to John Morgan, Attorney, about the Vern Fisher case. Mayor Allred will also submit the contract for the $80,-00- 0 grant. Allred also discussed the Mt. Pleasant Library request of $10,-00- 0 for the next budget year. Allred can not see the Spring City citizens paying this much money for the number of citizens who use the library. The search continued on Jan. 23, when 27 searchers, including seven dog handlers and four dogs, spent the day in adverse weather and avalanche conditions searching with no success. A search and rescue member was caught in an avalanche but escaped without injury, due to teh weather conditions, dangerous search has been postponed until it is safe for searchers to be on the mountain. Total man hours spent searching was 361, machine hours totaled 139, dog hours 32, and North Sanpete High School students who belong the airplane spent 8 hours. to Future Fanners of America recently visited f ir to putting up signs. The Affordable Housing Plan was passed, with no comments from the public. It was reported that the Fire Department held CPR classes and all members now have pagers. Material has been purchased to finish the new Fire Station. Juste-se- n completed an Eagle Project, mapping Spring City for the Fire Station. Val Sorensen discussed with the Council, a list he is working on for things that could still be done with the new water project.
