Show Page Two - The Pyramid - August 6 1997 Merrill Cooks vote against timber sales jeopardizes economy of rural counties MM ENT AIRY Dear Editor: Last week Representative Merrill Cook voted against funding for the Forest Service timber sale, road building programs and against increasing funding for the Payment in Lieu of Taxes program. These votes are a slap in the face to rural Utah counties as well as the families who live in those counties. Sadly, Rep. Cook failed to understand the interconnection between the sale of timber off the National Forest and payments to counties. Merrill Ogden camp." One of my best birth days of recent years was inviting a group of people to a lawn chair party at the drive-i- n where we watched Mel Gibson and Jody Foster in "Maverick." When doing the outside of the car method of viewing, remember to take a good boom box with charged batteries to tune in the stereo sound. I love getting a burger and a drink at the Basin. Popcorn I tastes better at the drive-ialso love it when I run into a friend at the snack bar whom I havent seen in a while. When bill on he throws a the counter as he leaves and tells the young woman: "Use that to pay for his stuff and give him the change;" I love it even more. (If you want to make someone feel good, try doing that if youve got an extra ten bucks. Its a rare occasion, but it happened to me Saturday night.) The drive-i- n movie experience is a part of traditional Americana that we fortunately can still make a part of our lives here in Sanpete. Movie fun, falling stars, romance, adventure (outside the fence and on the screen) good Sanpete friends; its all at the drive-i- n movies. See you there.... Merrill. Drive-i- n movies My folks didnt go to many movies. My dad used to remark that show houses didnt stay in business because of him. I remember, as a little kid in Richfield, being taken to the Rich Dnve-I(Long since closed down.) Thats where I saw "Johnny Tremain," and cringed when the title character got burned with molten metal. As I got older, on sleepout nights, my friends and I would sometimes wander up near the drive-i- n and watch some of the show. If no one had a speaker operating close enough to us, someone would have the scary job of going through the fence and scampering to a speaker and turning up the volume. Sometimes wed find a haystack which provided a vantage point. I remember seeing Cary Grant and Leslie Caron m "Father Goose" from the haystack. When the guys in my peer group started getting drivers licenses, we went to the drive-i- n on conventional terms, paying admission and everything. It was still fun, but the element of adventure was diminished. I dont recall ever being involved in the fabled trick of smugglmg people into the show in the trunk. Im glad that Sanpete has three big screens to chocs' from in the summertime. The county is lucky to have one of the few drive-i- n movie theaters left in Utah. I was at the Basin last Saturday night for the new Julia Roberts film, "My Best Friends Wedding." The show was entertaining and sometimes hilarious. Julia is one of Hollywoods hottest box office draws and has been ever since the big hit "Pretty Woman." To me, though, the real show at the drive-i- n is the experience of the drive-iI love being able to pull out chaise lounges, lawn chairs, and blankets from the trunk and set up a "movie watching n. n. ten-doll- ar n. We have been begging and pleading for parents to make sure their children are properly restrained in vehicles. The law stated that if you were convicted of that section of the traffic code, you could be fined $20. Also, if you brought in or showed the court that you have a child safety seat or just purchased one, the violation would be dismissed. The last session of the Legislature made a few changes in the law. The fine now has gone from $20 to $75 (or the cost of a safety seat). Thats a pretty hefty jump in the fine. Now there is really no reason for parents not to purchase a seat. I was in the parking lot of the county building in my personal truck one day to update the registration. I watched as a woman pulled into the parking lot with a young child unrestrained in the car. She opened the trunk, pulled out a child safety seat she borrowed from a friend, and went in to see the judge to get the fine dismissed. She showed the court she had obtained a seat, took it back out to the car, and put it back in the trunk. She then drove Joe Bailey, son of Warren and off smiling with the child still Lorraine Bailey, Fountain unrestrained. The rural counties in Utah stand to lose over $3 million annually. Rep. Cooks votes for the Kennedy-Porte- r amendment, against the Dicks amendment, and against the Sanders amendment are a clear indication that Mr. Cook has no understandmg of the importance of federal land management programs in Utah. It is also a clear indication that he has the same sophomonc understanding of Utah politics that the last two representatives from District Two had Almost everyone of Mr. Cooks constituents has a relative who lives in rural Utah and those people have influenced enough votes to swing the past two elections in District Two. Given Mr. Cooks performance on the Interior Appropriations Bill, I would suggest that he begin thinking about his career after Congress. The rural counties of Utah cannot afford to have a representative from District Two who knowingly works to destroy the economy of our rural counties. b |
