Show Page Eight - The Pyramid - June 25, 1997 Margaret Bench to be honored on 80th birthday FAIRVIEW The family of Margaret Bench will honor her on her 80th birthday at an open house on Saturday, June 28, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Fair-vieFirst LDS Ward, 122 South State Street. Margaret was bom June 26, 1919, to W.H. and Jane H. Brinton. She spent her early years in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from North Sanpete High School and Snow College. She received her BS degree from Utah State University and taught school in the North Sanpete School District for 20 years. She married G. Worth Bench, Dec. 20, 1941, in the Manti LDS Temple. He passed away in Worth and Margaret served in the Wisconsin Milwaukee LDS Mission and were ordinance workers in the Manti and Provo LDS temples. Margaret is active in community and church organizations. The family requests no gifts. w MANT- I- Cody Braithwaite, son of Ilene Frischknecht, Manti, and grandson of Thomas Brother-seMt. Pleasant, has received one gold and three silver medals in the Utah Summer Games on June 17, in Cedar City. Cody received a gold medal in the 5000M and a silver medal in the 3000M for races which he ran on the same day. He also received a silver medal on June 18 for a 1500M race after running a 400M with his friend, Brady Nielson, Ephraim, for fun. n, Codys first 10K race took place June 21, with a run down Cedar Canyon. He received his third silver medal. Three records were broken that morning in the 10K. He has qualifying times in several events this year for USA track and field competition. Cody is planning to attend the BYU y Camp in Provo and the Northern Arizona University Track and Field-CroCountry Camp in Flagstaff in July. Sanpete School by Gene Nielson PLEASAN- T- North and South Sanpete Districts received $401,700 for the extended school 2 year program for students project which began June 9 and will continue until July 4. In the second year of the three-yerural model pilot program, the project involves 1,200 students approximately with major emphasis on elementary enrollments, but recognizing the importance of testing secondary reforms and collaborating to test not only the extended year calendar, but a variety of dynamic reforms. Karen Kowalski, project monitor, outlined essential elements of the project. Each school is responsible for planning and organizing with standard requirements to increase achievement scores in math, reading, writing and science. Trips and events involve applied learning and experimentation of visual arts, music, lifelong "summer sports, Olympics", career education, community life, and job sharing. Objectives of the project are to increase the number of students eligible for early graduation; decrease the number of students who are credit deficient; increase the number of students K-1- each year in the extended year program. Karen Kowalski stated that an imperative objective is the of teachers, parents and students in the project Richard Burdick, a descendant of the Piute and Ute people, will perform traditional music playing a traditional Indian Love Flute. Morley Isaacson, from Price, will represent the Morley family and others who arrived on that cold winters day. Reid Bankhead, noted Book of Mormon scholar, is the featured speaker. He received his Master of Theology degree from BYU, where he taught for over 36 years. He also taught at the Salt Lake City Mission Home for 12 years and has been a high counselor, bishop and mission president for the Church of Jesus Saints. She also received a letter of commendation from President Clinton. To achieve the award, a student is required to be in the upper 15 percent of the nation in math, reading and language. They must score and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA during their fourth and fifth grade years. Kayleigh is the granddaughter of Eugene and Glenna Christensen, Moroni, and Bonnie Simons, Mt. Pleasant.
