Show Page Two - The Pyramid - July 17, 1996 July 4th parade looses meaning as commercialism takes command Commentary Dear Editor: An observation if you please: When attending the Mt. Pleasant parade on the Fourth of July I was quite amazed at the lack of representation of the true meaning of our most glorious day in the history of the foundation of our nations history. I didnt see one float depicting the real reason for the 4ths gala celebration, nothing to remind our young "children that this celebration was evolved around the fight of our forefathers to give them the freedom they enjoy today, no float which represented those brave militia men that fought and died for our independence, no banner to depict the document that declared our independence, you know that one called the "Declaration of Independence," the promises of freedom by those glorious men that are forgotten for the sake of a few fireworks, nor were there any floats or banners that bore any semblance to remind us, more important, our children, that the Constitution was the Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes July ramblings Ive decided that its a good thing that we Sanpeters live in sheep country. Were used to coming onto a herd of baa baas on the road. We know how to drive carefully, yet a little aggressively, to get through the herd. These skills come in handy this time of year while driving in Manti and elsewhere around the valley. The Manti pageant visitors are similar to sheep but not as predictable. My kids have finished their session of swimming lessons out at Flo Mitchells backyard pool in Chester. Now there is a peach of a person. Flo has been teaching swimming for thirty plus years and is still going strong. She has a great rapport with the kids. Flos special talent of helping kids gain confidence in the water is becoming a poorly kept secret. We were there Saturday for the last lesson of the session. I took a dip in the d pool. Flo complimented me on my sidestroke. I didnt dare let her know that when youve seen my sidestroke, youve pretty much seen it all. We ate a sandwich under a tree and got acquainted with three dogs. If you havent been swimming in Chester yet, you ought to treat yourself to the experience. Mitchells have open swimming for a small fee between 5 and 8 p.m. on weekdays. Its not too early to start thinking about the county fair. I know that ads are being collected and the fair book is being put together. Its time to plan an entry for the parade. Lets see if we can find something other than salt water taffy to toss out this year. Can anyone tell me why the county fair parade is called the "Mammoth Parade"? I suppose mammoth is a synonym for big. It seems that Fairview, home of the mammoth replica, would be the place for a mammoth parade. Local youth baseball and softball is winding down. Regular seasons are pretty much over. Qualifying teams are headed to state tournaments. My team of seven-an- d finished off our nice-size- mild-manner- ed year with a boys versus their mothers game. (Actually, since we included grandmas and sisters, and etc.; at the end of the game we cheered: "Rah, Rah, Rah: Adult Females") Dont ever underestimate the power of a woman with a baseball bat in her hands. These ladies were swinging for the fence and blasting the ball all over the place. Perhaps these gals need "a league of their own". Speaking of baseball, I think somebody should organize a Sanpete night at a Buzz game in Salt Lake. Dont you think it would be an impressive sight to have a couple of hundred Sanpeters sitting together screaming at the ump? When a Buzz player scored we could all do a turkey gobble or something. .... Christopher Cook, son of Lynn and Nora Cook, Moroni, has recently returned from the Italy Rome LDS Mission. Theyre having a great year and we could cheer Wally Joyner and the rest of the team on. We could do the trip during the National Republican Convention and do some picketing for Sanpete interests on the side. I fulfillment of that promise given to us by our forefathers. I can only surmise that we should change the reason for the celebration on the 4th of July to something like this, another reason for the merchants to entice the people to spend money at their stores, you know fireworks, etc. There was no lack of floats depicting what merchant had entered it in the parade, kind of reminds me of the Christmas parades, you know where the merchants again advertise, but the true meaning of the holiday is forgotten, the birth of Christ. How do we as the guiding factor to our children expect to remind them of their heritage, if the only thing we celebrate is another way to spend money? This must be so, as we surely dont display on any of the floats the true meaning of the 4th of July. Moroni City. On June 15th through the 17th we had the honor and privilege of hosting the Centennial Wagon Train. Then on the 4th of July we had a spectacular day! There is no way that one person can accomplish all that needs to be done to hold an event without a lot of help. Moroni City, and the surrounding communities, came out in full force to help with everything. I could go on and on with names and businesses that have helped to make' this Centennial year such a success in Sanpete Valley, but there isnt enough space in this paper to do that. I would just like Sanpete Valley residents to know that you are appreciated and that it is a great privilege to be a member of your county. Sanpete County was one of the best places that the wagons encamped. I have received nothing but compliments on everything that the county did for them and for the reception that they received in every city. All businesses and residents need to be complimented on all of their donations and the volunteer work that was done. No matter what we asked for, it was given and with a smile! The 4th in Moroni was such a great event. From the breakfast, done by the Moroni City Volunteer Fire Department, was great as it was during the Wagon Train event. Then the parade was even better than ever if that is possible. If you didnt get to the carnival or the Mud Boggs, you missed two great activities. The show that was put on by the Monster Trucks was spectacular! Then the turkey barbecue. I dont think Sanpeters ever get tired of barbecued turkey. They had just had it two weeks previous, and they came out in Kill force, and then there was a big turn out for the 4th. But to top off all the events, the Centennial Program that was put on by a number of committee members was something to behold. If you missed this event, you missed something great. Then the fireworks, Moroni City is GREAT! I can hardly wait for next year. They are going to have a hard time topping 1996! Barbara Gordon Moroni .. and the Constitution out of the classroom. You say this cant be so, I challenge you to ask any ten students of high school age to quote any of the amendments of the Constitution, or even more simply ask when it was signed, or how about the Declaration of Independence, how about having them quote a few lines of that document. I would be willing to bet, of 25 students, you may get" one, but I even have my doubts" about those odds. Next year how about some of you good (freedom loving) citizens on the parade counsel setting a theme to honor the men that won that freedom, bar any advertising by the merchants, carry the banners of freedom, the Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, on second thought why wait for a parade, have the learning of those documents a mandatory requirement for graduation from school. Of course, if you bar advertising by the merchants at any parade you can bet the parade will be a short one. As usual I have probably stepped on many toes with this letter, but my Constitutional right, the 1st amendment, free- -' dom of speech guarantee, allows me to do so. Not one bit sorry.... 1 John Burke Fairview Spring City slates second annual show SPRING CIT- Y- The second; annual car show sponsored by I Spring City Corporation and the ; Lions Club will be held in the city park on Saturday, July 20.
