Show Page Four - The Pyramid - March 1, 1995 Templars topple competition to take Reg. 12 title MP by Bruce Jennings Manti High School MANTI-- - basketball fans will be heading for St. George tournament today or early Thursday, March 2, for the opening round of the State 2A schedule. The Templars, Region 12s champions, will play San Juan, Region 13s number four team in the opening Thursday game morning at 10 a. m. The Manti coaching staff admits it knows little about the kind of ball the Broncos play, so theyll be making some phone calls and maybe looking at some tapes to size up the situation. In the past, the Broncos have been noted for their rugged and physical style. The Templars realized their first main goal of the roundball season (successful defending their Region 12 championship) last week, and out to fulfill their second goal, the Stale 2 A championship this week. Its been a long time since Manti won the state championship so long, in fact that some of the members of that team are now grandfathers. The Templars came razor close several times and last year were favorites, but took a couple of unexpected tournament losses. This year theyre favorites, but so are a couple of other teams-aga- in. several times ranked number one in the states 2 A MHS, division, waltzed through Region 12 tournament play with surprising ease last week. When the fireworks ended, Manti had won its way into the 4 championship game with an tally. Twelve Templars had scored. It was Manti versus Millard in the title match and Millard was the only team to defeat Manti in a regular 2A game. They aver9-- aged 51.7 points per game from the field. Leading the pack was PJ Steadman averaging 14.6 points per game and a total of 306 for the season. Eric Dyches was next averaging points per game and 232 for the season. Ioane aver 1 1 aged 10.4 points with a total of 207 points. Matt Larson led with 25, followed by Kjar with 18 and Ioane with 10.
