Show Thursday, March 25, 2004 PYRAMID THE 2 Credit scoring mystery revealed INSIDE By Merrill Ogden SANPETE ROCKVILLE, MD Credit scoring is commonly used when a person applies for a mortgage, auto loan, credit card or other type of loan. Lenders use the score to determine the interest rates they will charge and whether they will extend a loan. But while most consumers are aware that their credit score can be an important factor in the loan approval process, many do not know the factors that go into their score. "While it's important to know your credit score when you are applying for a loan, knowing what goes into your score can help you save money," said Jen Anthony, president of OnePay, a nonprofit debt management organiza- Moroni's fifth and sixth grade boys won the sportsmanship award in the fifth and sixth grade division of the Junior Jazz basketball competitions. (Don't tell Kurt, but I like this version better than his usual synthesizer rendering.) I saw people from up and down the county at the con "heart-touchin- cert. These were people who were willing to pay $8.00 per r ticket for the show. I suspect thafthere were some people who didn't attend who may have thought that the price was steep. I would bet that those who did attend felt that they more than got their money's fund-raise- worth. I thought about this concept a bit after the show was finished. I thought about what we as parents and community members support in our schools. I think we're getting better at sustaining the wider range of school programs. However, I believe we still have a way to go in some of our attitudes. Many of us think nothing of forking out $5.00 for a seat at a school ball game. We open our wallets time and time again during a season and don't blink an eye. And there's nothing wrong with that. But for some reason when it comes to paying for a musical event in the school, some of us second guess and scratch our heads wondering if we should spend the moneyI do believe that Sanpete is better than some areas in prosupporting gramming. And like I say, I think we're getting better at non-athlet- ic it. Our school athletic programming has great support and tradition. We should be proud of that in Sanpete. I enjoy a good ball game as much as the next guy. But, I believe that we just have to be careful. Some of us tend to overemphasize the athletics aspect of the school experience while neglecting other activities. There are many students who spend hours and hours practicing on musical instruments and rehearsing with the band or orchestra. Choral groups, dance and drill teams, and cheer squads do the same thing. There are likewise many students who memorize and rehearse-lonhours for speech and drama competitions and productions. And there are many other endeavors that students spend time with in our schools which deserve recognition. I would hope that we, as a Sanpete community, will be willing to support our kids in school in all of their many pursuits; regardless, and perhaps especially, if that pursuit doesn't involve a balL.Merrill Booking Report 49 West Main Pleasant, UT 81647 six-ma- events 6 Hie Pyramid Mt Manti High School. The group "Voice Male" put on a terrific show to benefit the music department at the school. I hadn't realized that this group had such a local following until that night. People were whooping and hollering as if The Rolling Stones were on stage. "Voice Male" was formed in Logan at the Utah State University, 10 years ago. The singers have other lives and jobs apart from the music world. Evidently, they still perform because they love it and people love them. I was ignorant of the fact that one member of the n r. group was a native Richard McAllister, the high tenor, is a North Sanpete "kid." That may have accounted for some of the crowd enthusiasm. He lives in Lehi now and is involved in commercial real estate. The bass singer, Mike Wilson, is originally from Emery. He and Richard are both former Snow College students. Mike was a member of Snow's show choir "Ascension" while Richard performed with the "LD Singers." The harmonies, musical arrangements and phenomenal sound effects were totally entertaining. It was hard to believe at times that everything that I was hearing was coming from those six mouths. Much of the program was comedic and had the audience laughing and giggling for most of the show. A notable exception to the humor, and a highlight of the evening, was their rendition of Kurt Bestor's now famous "Prayer of the Children." Having served an LDS Yumission to goslavia in the late 1970's, Best or wrote this song as a response to the war and upheaval there. The opening lyrics are: "Cap you hear the prayer of the children on bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room? Empty eyes with no more tears to cry, your score before making a large purchase like a home, you can save thousands of dollars in interest payments." According to Fair, Isaac, the company that developed the credit scoring models, the factors that go into your credit score are: Payment history. This is the biggest factor in your credit score and accounts for about 35 percent of your score. If you've had any late payments or other problems, getting them behind you and letting time pass, will help. Total debts. The total amount of debts you have counts for about 30 percent of your score, If you have debts other than your mortgage, such as a car or personal loan, a higher debt load could hold your score down. Credit history. The length of your credit history counts for about 15 percent of your score. The longer your credit history, the better. So keep your oldest credit card accounts open. Types of credit. The variety of credit you have counts for about 10 percent of your score. This includes credit cards, mortgages, installment loans, student loans and any other types of credit. New credit. The amount of new credit you are applying for or receiving makes up about 10 percent of your score. It is important to note that this is not an exact formula and each percentage is an approximation. Each factor that is taken into account in determining your score is based on your individual credit report and could change over time.
