Jensens Inc. will celebrate its anniversary this month. The store opened in 1925, and is possibly the only business in Sanpete which is still operating under the founding family. There are a few older businesses, but managements have changed. The store was begun by brothers, Gail and Kay Jensen, former shoe salesmen in Salt Lake, while attending University of Utah. The first location was a small room in the north half of what is now the senior citizens building. It was there they decided to start a sample shoe store. They had very little capital to start their venture. Their plans were to sell from samples and take orders to be delivered on a basis. They also added a small stock of packaged and canned goods and several clothing items, such as overalls, sweaters, hats and underwear. Believing they could do business with a smaller mark-u- p than other stores in the area, the Jensen brothers added one dollar to their cost and paid the 20 cents postage from Salt Lake. They stayed in this location for about three months, then moved to a larger room which is now the school district office. They then moved back into the room which is presently the 70-ye- ar Kimmy Allred and Jerron Jensen said nuptial vows SPRING CITY Cassandra and Don Chambers; and Jeff Allred, announce the marriage of their daughter, Kimmy Dawn Allred, to Jerron Jensen, son of Joy and Stanton Seely, Mt. Working on a low mark-u- p their business thrived, so they borrowed money to open a store in Gunnison. Gail moved to Gunnison in the fall of 1926, where he ran the second store for one year. In days gone by, merchandise was stacked on shelves, in drawers, in and under display cases. Products were not easily accessible to the customer like they are today. Each customer was waited on individually. At one time, there were five clerks, plus family members to run the store. It was in the early 50s, the system changed and they began to display clothes on hangers and other merchandise was put out so the customer could make a selection. Now usually one clerk and family members can easily handle the business. Bookkeeping is something else that has changed, Bob noted. He remembers when that part of the business could be done in 10 minutes, and now keeping up with all the government forms takes many hours. Bobs son, John, joined the firm in 1979. Both Jensens ex- pressed their appreciation to their customers from throughout the county for enabling them to reach this milestone. 70-ye- ar Jensen, his wife Joyce, John Jensen and wife Kay (not pictured) are preparing for the seventieth anniversary of Jensens Department Store in Manti this week. The store was founded in 1925 by brothers Gail and Kay Jensen and has remained in the Jensen family since that time. On Tuesday, the 4th of July, Elmo Davis will celebrate his 30th Birthday.
