Show Page Eight - The Pyramid June 21, 1995 -- 4 4 Rozella Collard to lead Youth Pioneer Parade MT. PLEASAN- T- The Sanpete Youth Pioneer Pageant has selected Rozella Jensen Collard to be the grand marshal of its Youth Parade scheduled June 30. Collard, 102, was born Nov. 5, 1892, in Fountain Green, to Annie Christina Aagard and Niels Martinus Jensen. She started school when she was six years old learning reading, penmanship, arithmetic, spelling, history and geography. When she was 14, she went to Ephraim with her aunt, where they lived in two rooms in the back of widow Staggs home and both attended Snow Academy, where Collard finished eighth grade and completed the academys regular curriculum., She returned to complete a kindergarten training program for teachers. She married George E. Collard, a former Snow College student body president, on Dec. 23, 1914, in the Manti LDS Temple. They moved into their apartment in a house her father still owned and that she had grown up in. They had eight children: Rea, Ellis, Claren Helen Ann, Robert, Carol, George Jr., Kenneth and Cath-ry- The couple moved their family to Provo, then to Salt Lake where George was employed by the Utah Livestock Production Credit Association. In 1941, they moved back to Provo and lived there until moving to Fairview in 1969. Rozella lived there until moving to Salt Lake City in 1989 to live with her daughter, Carol. Rozella has lived in a time In October 1923, George left on a two-yemission for the LDS Church to the Northern States. Rozella was left to manage four young children, a sheep business, a black cow to milk and a Model T car to drive. ' One winter all the children had measles, whooping cough, mumps and chicken pox. She served as YWMIA president which kept her busy until her husbands return. Guthries jumpers use rectangular chutes, called "square" chutes, capable of 30 mph forward speed, which make it possible to navigate land- j n. ar when few women worked outside the home. Her only experience in the work force was before her marriage when she clerked in her grandfathers mercantile store. Like most women, she was a housewife and mother, which was her lifes priority. Perhaps part of the hardest times of her life were during World War II. One son, a pilot, was missing in action over the Himalayan mountains but later found his way out and other reminders of her handi- of the jungle, and another son was killed in action in Saipan. Her happiest years were when her children were at home. She was a good cook and most often there were extra people for meals. She was and is known for her delicious homemade bread. Daughters and friends have been recipients of her sewing skills. Granddaughters all have quilts work. Skydivers jump into pageant MT. PLEASAN- T- Did you even wonder what the most dangerous part of a skydivers performance was? According to Jack Guthrie, professional "jumper" who is coordinating the skydiving exhibition during the Sanpete Pioneer Youth Pageant its driving home in his car after the jump is over. Guthrie has been jumping for 26 years and just completed his 6,000th jump last weekend. He spearheads an organization of 30 jumpers (men and women) who skydive as a summertime activit- what elevation the jumpers would get out, but he said they would be getting out just as high as they could, would free fall for a peri pre-sho- od of time and then open their shoots and "land at the appointed place at the appointed time." There will be ground communicati- not verbal-t- o ensure the success of the goal. Guthrie will send three of his jumpers all three nights, but he doesnt know their names because all the 30 jumpers at his disposal have other occupations and he will work around their schedules. Guthrie said he is the only jumper in his organization who doesnt have a and will try to be there one of the nights. on-signalling She was a helpmate to her husband in all of his community activities. George served as mayor of Provo and a member of the State Legislature for three terms. He was the bishop of two LDS wards. Rozella has been active in the LDS Church, teaching Primary when she was 14 years old. She has served in Sunday School, YWMIA, and every Relief Society position including 50 years as a visiting teacher. In 1952-5she served an LDS Mission with her husband at the Hill Cumorah in Palmyra, NY. She has belonged to the Shuttle Club, Yesharah Club, Alice Louise Reynolds Literary Club, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and many sewing clubs. She and George were happily married for 67 years before his death. They have five children living, 38 grandchildren, 68 Rozella 3, and 14 She has held them all and keeps in touch with them. J.
