Show Safe and Sane Fourth At Mount Pleasant The Celebration of the birth of our great nation was carried out in a safe and sane manner this year. All fire crackers were done away with and no shooting was done except by those appointed to give the firing salule. At sunrise the band played while the Stars and Strips were being raised. Meeting was held at 10 o'loek in the assembly hall. Mayor James W. Anderson, master of cermonies. Music was furnished by the band and Patriotic songs were sung by the audience. Chaplain, Daniel Ras-mussen. Ras-mussen. Girl's chorus, under the direction of Tressa Larson. Reading, of Declaration of Independence, Inde-pendence, Judge Ferdinand Ericksen Piano solo, Miss Mable Borg. Declamation, Stella Olsen. Vocal solo, Miss Estella Allen. The orator of the day was Wm. M. McCrae, assistant United States District Attorney. In the afternoon Company D gave a sham battle making a desperate at-tact at-tact on Fort Wise at the City Park. The comany was repulsed once and had to retreat, but finally took the fort by making a charge under heavy firing. Tne Stars and Stripes were raised over the fort and Company D was declared victorious. After the battle the Retail Clerks of Salt Lake City and the local Ball team played a good team. The game was 3 to 2 in favor of the local team until the seventh innings when the tide changed and the game wound up with a score of 9 to 7 in favor of the Retail Clerks. There will be another game by the same teams at the park today at ten o'clock. The dance at the Opera House last Friday night w is well attended and all who attended had a fine time. The new orchestra, under the able .eadership of the Dawson Sisters, furnished excellent music. Extensive Extens-ive improvements, in the way of enlarging en-larging the hall are now under way and when completed this will make one of the prettiest and best dancing danc-ing pavilions in the state. |
