Dutson Marge Barton Having just finished reading and pondering over a book telling the details of how our Founding Fathers finally finished the putting together of our Kerrle Snyder: Compositor Constitution of the United States, I have been interested in the present struggle going on between our Governor Scott Matheson and our Legislature, over the appointing of our Supreme Court Judges. This is purely a case of politics. We have a democratic governor and the upper house of the legislature predominately republican. The judges appointed in Utah have been predominately democrats, and politics is not suppose to enter into the appointment of judges, nor should it ever be an issue. However, it could influence a decision in some cases. The legislature, or at least the majority of the members think the judges appointed by Governor Matheson should be approved by the upper house of the legislature and it will be interesting to see how the difficulty is resolved. If the legislature wins their point, it means a more difficult time each time a new judge is appointed. The Founding Fathers, who were determined to make every man free from oppression, set up a government with three branches, the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial branches. The Executive and Legislative branches are elected by the people, but the Judicial is appointed by the governor of each state. However, our Legislature intends to have a part in accepting the appointments. It will probably be some time before the case Is decided as the judges of the Supreme Court of the United States will have the final say in interpreting the law. We are constantly hearing something about somebodys rights. For instance, Womens Rights, Citizens Rights, Civil Rights, the rights of the minorities such as negroes, Indians, emmigrants from foreign countries; we could go on and on. Do we ever atop to think of who is responsible for seeing that each of the groups gets its rights? Our Founding Fathers thought surely with three branches of government, each branch checking on the other to make sure that it was doing Its job, everyone would be sure to get his rights. In protecting our own rights we must be sure we do not trample on the rights of others. Just because we have gone to the polls and voted doesn't mean we are finished or our duties as citizens are finished. We now must watch carefully to see that each elected official does the job he was elected to do. Certain prominent companies will pay members of our law making bodies large sums of money to get certain legislation passed which will be for the good of those companies. We must keep In touch with the new laws which are being proposed and make sure they are in the Interest of the people, rather than helping big investment companies make big profits for their share holders. Nearly everyday we read of some elected officers who have accepted bribes to help somebody do something that is not allowed according to law. Passing laws does not mean that crime will stop, but if that law Is backed by strong public opinion, criminals will think twice before attempting to break that law. I was shocked when I read of that grocery store In Los Angeles which had ten of its employees steal from it, just to prove that people will not report the thefts. Although the employees took the goods away and come back for more, not one theft was reported by the people who saw them steal. When the owners asked some of the customers why they did not report the thieves, they said they did not want to have to go to court and testify and be questioned by "smart lawyers". Officers cannot watch every store and catch all of the thieves. It Is up to honest citizens to help report all wrong doing, and until we each do our part in reporting any crime, we cannot expect to stop this wave of crime; much of it caused by the illegal use of dope and the lack of proper supervision of our young people. I am strongly In favor of playground equipment, a tennis court, a softball diamond In our North Park, as well as using the amphitheatre to teach dancing, dramatics, etc., to our priceless young people. We can do these projects if we just organize properly and stay with the projects until they are completed. Playground equipment could be made by our high school shop department and the different clubs could purchase the material for making the equipment. I promise to raise money for the playground equipment material, if the men's clubs will get the tennis court and the softball diamond. Our different organizations could oversee the various groups in their activities. It can be done! its a girl!
