After Saturday’s School Trust Land meeting held at the Delta Technical School the answer was given by B ill Christensen chairman of the committee to revamp State policy toward School Trust Land: "Hey it’s only lOpcrcentof the State's land why worry about it right?” Mr Christensen could have also added that the land represents the future of Utah's school children but he didn’t To be fair Millard County wasn’tthe only empty room across the State at the meeting held through channel FdN' a communications where participants can lie seen and heard through television A handful of participants in St George dominated the meeting between Mr Christensen and Robert Wood a developer in the Wasatch Front area who broadcast from the University of Utah Snow College and SevierTechni-ca- l College had zero participants just like the Delta Technical College site The mission of the meeting was to receive input from various entities as to the forming of a new committee which will nominate another committee which will be chaired by a single Commissioner to administrate the school trust lands across the state Governor Michael Leavitt has asked for this nominating committee to be in place by November 30th Then the process enters the legislature where it will said several of the participants under Mr Christensen get chewed up and spit out in any one of a number of shapes and sizes “The Governor may throw all our recommendations out completely or we keep what we have now" said Garfield County Commissioner Louise Liston "It will almost certainly be politicized in the process" The politicizing of the school trust lands was a major concern with one participant in particular who argued that wildlife perspectives be reflected on the nominating committee "When we talk about school lands we talk about money” said Mr Cordell Peterson of St George "When 7 million acres were set aside man was about taming nature" Adding that nature should now be protected Mr Peterson said: "You can’t divorce school trust land from other lands when talking about benefitting wildlife with habitat and endangered —y species I would hope these concerns will be taken care of as well as those of our children” Commissioner Louise Liston and attorney Barbara Yjcllc both assured Mr Peterson that wildlife concerns would be addressed though the new committee Another viewpoint was expressed: “Years ago Washington County never had a single tortoise If anyone brought a tortoise in it was an object of curiosity Our numbers now show the tortoise is proliferating diminishing Last year we were afraid we’d hit a deer on the road this year we hoped we’d see one These are the traps that have us misusing our resource" A letter written by US Representative Met Johnson to a Kane County newspaper was read into the record In it he proposes that the State swap Zion’s National Park to the school trust lands as a way to generate income for Utah’s children’s future “That's very clever" said Mr Christensen "Whether it's really thought through is another ques- tion" The School Trust Lands like the islands of Wilderness Study Areas need to be evaluated piece by piece "looking at all the lands and the diversity of those lands" offered Mr Peterson "One usually tries to preserve an asset” he said Mr Christensen agreed: “Getting rid of the lands quickly has never been an issue except by those who have already squandered those lands We’ve squandered and misused this resource w hich could have been a tremendous resource for our children Since 1987 we’ve lost 35 million acres now perhaps it’s best to have some kind of a call" The lands arc currently managed under the Division of Natural Resources “The current board is seen as a weakness in the management of these lands" said attorney Yjelle who represents both Garfield and Washington County “Our goal is to improve the - our school benefits to beneficiaries children" assuring that “the trust lands not be used for private interests without best benefitting the schools” If the lands are sold “we want market value not a pittance" said a member of Washington County's PTA Mr Christensen assured her that would be the case: “We are paying attention" he said in conclusion -
