Masked masters of theatre illusion to appear in Delta IMAGO The Theatre Mask Ensemble internationally acclaimed masters of stage illusion will bring their unique brand of entertainment to Delta on Thursday January 25 1990 at 7:30 pm The award winning company has been captivating audiences of children and adults alike on their international tours with an unusual kind of theatre The perform ances of IM AGO transport onlooker to a populous dreamworld of fanciful characters and odd creatures where back can be front top may be bottom arms are really legs and comings are goings These magical stagings are concocted by artistic directors and company founders Jerry Mouawad and Carol Uselman and the look of their work defies categorization Mime dance acrobatics drama costuming and stunning visuals all combine for a truly kind theatrical genre in which the pretext is "Mask as vehicle" Mouawad and Uselman with backgrounds rich in Lccoq mime and dance deft in are also clever conceptualise plastic art The talented pair who have been collaborating since 1979 create all their own masks and costumes They wood ingeniously meld plaster paints and various "Knick Knacks' The conventional face coverings which the company name suggests become distinct characterizations playful and original in design often making the bizarre seem familiar But face coverings are just the beginning As skilled stage performers this designing team has a keen eye for dramatic possibilities and has balanced their wonderful paraphernalia with maximum potential for stage use They have proved that a mask is not necessarily just something for the face Hence a mask can be for the top of a head or the back of a head or any and all parts of the body The head may disappear altogether as in the case of one particular acrobatics worm They have developed simple and original of appendages and forms Mask becomes both medium and story as audiences sojourn through the sagas of video cowboys unbelievable frogs odd nameless creatures Beg inning with a perceptive look at the everyday world their journey progresses into the delightful surreal a fantasy realm that exists beyond the imagination a plan somewhere between narrative and myth Mouawad Uselman and fellow performers work not only in a variety of mask but in a number of mask styles summoning up a sense of whimsy and play that is at once infectious This is complete theatre with simple and recognizable sublime and provocative dramatic actio It's imagery for children and inspiration for adults Not only are the masks original but the music is too It is composed by Daniel Brandt and enhances each stage piece with the suitably unconventional times of and other instruments synthesizer Rhythms and dynamics prove compelling and intense accompaniments to the drama or comedy developing Virtuosos in their mediums the artists of IMAGO continue to develop their mastery of illusion Inspired use of materials electronics and staging is a constant renewing mechanism that renders their work always evocative of something new and in flux The result is what The San Francisco Chronicle calls a “Special smorgasbord of mask mime dance quite wonderfully rendered" and what has been dubbed “a madcap revue" by The New York Times in which "a multitude of curious critters" leaves everyone "feeling giggly" In short excitement not to be missed
