Dei'a for the day For a few hours on Wednesday Feb 22 the Clerk’s office was a foidrag tank on the page of the DHS auditorium Choir spokeswoman Jane Ekras sad 44 students processed “We still have about eight more to do” she sad “some kids were sak and so on" Ekins sad about 50 students are going to France with 13 chaperones A few problems were found on birth certificates “V e’re getting all kinds of surprises around here” Ekins sad “V rorg spellirg wrong bulhdaies wrong names It’s gorng to be an interesting day” Passport apphcuVutis usually take “a weeks” to clear V bicker sad Vi hat happens if one doesn't clear? “They’ll serd them back and kt us know what the probkm is ard we just keep applying until they do clear” she said It was the largest Single group of passport applications a living Kira grew up in Rapid City South Dakota a here her affection for dog began at about age 10 “J grew up with a woman who bred poodle” Kim says “She also had a groomery and she taught me” “A kit of people who raise dogs also have groorneriev” the says “because you do a lot of grooming (or show 1 o help support their kennel they start groomenes” She followed her father in a career move to Salt Lake CVy before moving to Delta in 1985 to tend friend Joan Wan berg' collie kennel while Joan worked But Kira wanted to open her own business She turned to grooming friend Dak McTee a computer technician at IPP to help finance it Angelyn Groomery and Supplies opened for business in Oct 1986 Kira also breeds Shetland sheep dogs sheUies as a hobby “You don’t make mpney taking dogs” she says i "You do it more or kss just for your own satisfaction By the time you’ve paid for shot and stud fees and all that you don't make money” Dak likes sheltic almost a much as Kira does “1 like them because they’re small" he says "They’re so much easier to deal with We had some tollies for a whik and they just tore everything apart” Last year Kim lost her enure kennel except for one sheiite and one male and one femak offspring Kim blames “bad dog food combined with lead poisoning m the water" for the loss “It got so bad we had emergency trips to bait Lake City on Sunday nights It pretty well wiped out the entire ken nel" she says Kim got a show quality sheitie shipped in from Minnesota to get s'arted again “ft was my Christmas presere” she says Kim shows in Utah and Idaho and wants to expand Good sheltic are expensive Kim says In Kansas City for example pet sheitie puppies start at $300 “L'p in Michigan pet puppies sell for $5 00” she says By “pet puppies" Kim means the dog lacks show quality and cannot be bfed but still makes for a good pet Show dogs cost more Kim recently returned to school to study general educanon as a prelude to getting a degree in veterinary medicine “J don't want to be a practicing vet” Kim says “1 want to do research ” After the loss of her dogs last year Kim did a lot of research in nutrition and toxicology on her own Dak says Kim knows more about toxicology than most grad students “One of my vets up in bait I ake told me ‘Jf need to find out something about kad I’m going to have to call you”' Kim says Still school is no breeze “It's a tough because have a big problem with math" she says "and it’s a lot of math m the vertermary part ” But Kim will persist “When I was growing up my mother used to say to me (hat ought to be a vet I'm working on it” After completing her general ed Kim expects two years of quirements t schooling then eight years of veterinary school Right now she takes classes from bnow College and Utah btate at the West Central Utah Vocational Center in Delta Since Kim returned to smool she no longer does her own grooming Brenda Thomas has just been hired to do most of it be three American groups there” fe “us owner from Costa Mesa C A would love to have someone find it If anyone sees a Peregrine falcon please try to call to it A good way of determining if it is the missing bird is to tie a leather glove on a rope or piece of twine and whirl it around in the air he falcon will fly to it The bird will have two leather ankkts with brass rivets one on each kg Also a brown and black federal marker with numbers RLC8I 109 on the right leg and a silver marker on the left kg A small black transmitter is connected to one of the markers and is about the size of the thumb with a 12 inch long antenna of tapabil ties The male won 5th place I he two young falconers were out on the desert Sunday morning exercising their two birds when the radio transmitter on the leg of the male bird malfunctioned The
