Show Business of the Week David Dailey Carolyn Erickson Abe Dailey Owners of new business look to the future I I I1 by Dawn Carder The Grand Opening of Carolyn’s was held on Thursday Upholstery June 16 Located in a building owned by Kennard Carter at 940 West 130 North (West Lyman Row) the business is beginning in a small manner--table a sewing machine and two employees The owners however are looking to the future when they hope to branch out and eventually hire as many as twelve employees Two brothers Abe and David Dailey own the Salt Lake City based Bonneville Contract Management Inc which is the umbrella company for The Daileys Carolyn’s Upholstery started out in landscaping the primary business of Bonneville remains landconstruction but the scape ingenious duo has expanded operations to include other services According to Abe Dailey Bonneville Contract Management Inc is a family concern Abe is the President David is in charge of the landscape construction Abe’s wife is the secretary and David’s wife takes care of payroll In American Fork where they all live the have a “little research lab” There the in an four periodically “brainstorm” attempt to come up with new the Actually marketing ideas brainstorming resulted in new product ideas when the question was asked “What do we do in the winter?” Abe stated “The old adage ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ definitely applies” Erickson is Abe Dailey’s Originally from American she got her professional start at Then she married Alpine Upholstery Delta native LaVoy Erickson and the two moved to Millard County twenty years ago Life has been busy for Carolyn She has eight children (Five are still living at home) for whom to care and she continued to do upholstery work in her home for many years More recently she was employed as a cook at Rick's Family Restaurant Carolyn believes that there is a need for the new business in Delta “When was doing upholstery work in my home” she commented “1 always had I did a little of plenty of work seats sofas boats traceverything--ca- r tors even a toilet seat!” and And “anything everything” is what Carolyn plans to do in the new shop Customers will be able to select Carolyn Fork a the desired fabric from a selection of swatches materials arrive the next day and Carolyn gets right to work Store hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday the need for an Recognizing upholstery business in the Delta area yet mindful of the struggling economy Abe Dailey acknowledged that he envisions the scope of sales opportunity to be broader than the local vicinity What he and David hope to add in the future is a line of furniture Upholstery will remain the nucleus of the operathe tion but if all goes as planned Daileys will purchase furniture frames and the finish from a manufacturer work will be done in the Delta shop As the business expands to include a furniture line the projections are that Carolyn’s Upholstery will become an entity in itself Abe Dailey will be the managing partner Carolyn will be the supervisor and additional employees will be hired There may also be other products to prepare and market as ideas continue to formulate The creative minds of Abe and David Dailey seem to be constantly in motion as they respond to consumer needs A graduate of BYU with a degree in Social Psychology Abe says the field has become “applied (Dave too attended psychology”!
