Clara Robison On March 13 Alta Shumway went to American Fork with her daughter Rachael and her husband Eldon Marshall of St George to attend the homecoming of Alta’s granddaughter Lori Parrish daughter of Lafe and Joyce Parrish of American Fork Following the homecoming program at the church the Parrish and Shumway families gathered at the home of Lafe and Joyce Parrish for a buffet dinner Lorie is glad to be home again after serving an 18 month LDS mission in the Philhpines She and her companion had to endure many hardships which included living in bug infested huts eating strange and often raw foods and using water laced with purex But they endured and learned to love the people and especially the children Lorie brought home many pictures and special gifts for everyone including jewelry picture frames and handmade lace bed spreads Lorie’s sister Sherrie Parrish is presently serving an LDS mission in Canada Newcomers to East Millard are Cliff and Betty Fowler who purchased the those w'hom we would lead” President Spencer W Kimball seminar and Presidents for new mission Regional Representatives The Deseret District has always been blessed with wonderful youth leadership This year is no exception All of this year’s Scout Leaders are able to build a fire within tht youth they lead On March 12 in the Delta Utah Stake Center scouters met to honor some of those great youth leaders A nice dinner was prepared for those attending by Tom Nielson District Scout Chairman and the District Program Chairmen Special awards and recognition were given by the District CommitThe guest speaker was tee Chairman president Glen W Swalberg He talked about the special relationship the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints has enjoyed with the Boy Scouts of America for the last 75 years and about the financial requirements of the Utah National Parks Council He commented on how well our council is financially managed and how they work so hard to keep the cost for each individual boy down This year’s second milers awards were given to the following leaders: Trina W Gardner: Trina is serving as a Den Leader Coach and on the District Round Table Staff She has been involved in Scouting for five years In the past she has served on the Akela Council staff as a Den Leader assistant Cub Master and a Blazer Leader She is a trained leader who has taken Den Leader Training and Akela Council training Gene A Ekins: Gene is a long time scouter having served 15 years He is presently serving as an Order of the Arrow Advisor and as the 2nd Counselor in the Stake Young Mens presidency in the Delta West Stake He is very capable and is wood badge trained He was an Eagle Scout as a boy He has received the Vigil Honor from the Order of the Arrow Another position where Gene Arrow members Michael D Rose: President Rose is a member of the District Scout Committee serving as a Member at Large He has served as a Scout Master Blazer Leader and Explorer leader He has been registered as a Scout and as an adult leader a total of 23 years He has received advanced training completing the ELI course for Explorer Leaders While he was an Explorer Advisor he participated with his post in the Explorer Demolition Derby and in the National Explorer Olympics President Rose has spent his entire adult life as a leader of youth Besides he was a his work in Scouting seminary teacher Young Mens President Bishop and Sunday School Teacher He is truly an outstanding leader of youth Grant C Bennett: Grant is the Inin the 3rd stitutional Representative in the ward and a 2nd counselor He has served as Scout Bishopric and Kanab Master in Delta During this last year Mr Bennett saw five Of the boys he worked with become Eagle s Scouts These comments were made on his application for second miler: “Grant is an individual who is a believer in how scouting can work for the building of boys He has been an and instrument in the improvement better development of Scouting in the Delta 3rd Ward He seeks knowledge from the resources available and takes steps to organize according to guidelines He has been very supportive of District activities such as Survival of the Fittest by providing services from his business Grant certainly is one who goes the second mile The District Award of Merit Deseret District awarded two awards of merit this year The awards were given to Kenneth Aaron Lebbon and Debra L Lopez Kenneth Aaron Lebbon: Ken has served nine years in various positions He has been Varsity in scouting Coach committee member Varsity team District Varsity Chairman and a Cub Scout is He wood badge trained and has served as a leader in several Varsity wood badge courses He served on Varsity training camp staff in 1987 and is course director for the Varsity All Star Training in 1988 He is developing betfor All Star ter adult leadership Training Some of the comments on his application: “Ken has been a very committed coach and meets with his team on a regular basis He can recognize the needs of a boy and uses Varsity Scouting to meet those needs He is blessed with the ability to work effectively with young men” Debra L Lopez: Debra is registered m scouting this year as a member of the District Advancement Committee and in her ward as a Den Leader She has given 82 years of service holding positions on the District Advancement Stake Blazer Leader committee Cub Master Round Table Trainer Den Leader Sustaining Membership Chairman and Troop and District AdDebra is one vancement Committees of the better trained leaders in the District She is wood badge trained she has attended Philmont Scout Training She has also taken Scouters Basic and Den Leaders Training and she has served on the staff of Little Philmont Debra organized and gave leadership to several very fine Blazer Day Camps while serving as Stake Blazer Leader She has been willing to not only go and become trained but to bring that training back and share it with the people in our district Mrs Lopez has not only provided excellent leadership to those with whom she worked but she has supported her husband in his scout work as Scout Master and
