got to get on that) and papers also promotes public welfare (we try) White Senator Baker Howard House Chief of Staff was the luncheon His speech was Rah Rah speaker Reagan of course but he kept it on the light side I have some quotes I wrote on napkins and backs on match book covers I will attribute to him and hope I am right "Lawyers are replacing white mice - there are some things white mice won’t do” “Jimmy Swaggart is called a new magazine starting Dr Sergey B Cherverikov Soviet Minister - Counsler Embassy made Brittney worry that when we laughed it would make them angry But most were they friendly and accomodating They served a buffet and drinks The buffet was a mix of Soviet food such as Russian and Cossack and included caviar and many other interesting things I couldn’t pronounce I was told the bread with meat inside was a food datng back to the 13th century I talked with Victor Karasin Managing Editor of Soviet Life Magazine He is in charge of a magazine in the US which has a US counter part in Russia a trade agreement They are limited in the number of subscribers they can have The government funds their publication so they don’t sell advertising but he said there is never asked the comparison enough money of Rupels to dollars but got all confused when he brought up kopeks We common talked about our problems of drug and alcohol abuse and aids We talked a bit about schools in Russia and he said that in some parts of Russia Russian is taught as a second language and all students start studying English in the second grade (I continually think that the US is far with their behind other countries Repenthouse” He told us when he retired from the Senate he planned to go home and relax do a little fishing and such and when someone came up to him and said “Senator Baker I know you don’t remember me” He was going to say “You’re right I don’t remember you and frankly I don’t give a damn” But President Reagan called him back to service and he responded He also told of when his father was campaigning he saw one last potential voter sitting on a park bench whittling He went over and stuck out his hand and said “I’m Baker and I would like your vote” The man on the bench didn’t look up and didn’t quite whittling and said “Don’t vote never have just encourages them” The afternoon was our embassy visit and we went to the Soviet Union There are cameras in the yard which guards watch on monitors but no metal detecThe Amtors or purse searches bassador had gone to Boston for a Russian music festival so we were addressed by Dr Sergey B Chetverikov He spoke on the Minister - Counselor Soviet’s hope for a joint economic ventures with the United States He said they hope the missile treaty will be ratified and they can move on to more treaties with the US He also said “if the Russians and the United States continue with their military pursuits the Japanese will win” meaning while we spend money the Japanese will be making money He said they are ready for more disarmament talks Human rights are most important to Russians he said Their citizens are medical socially protected housing and social services They wish to host humanitarian summits with the US and other western nations They are also democratizing their electoral system And a first they are holding public hearings for their citizens on the new treaties The Soviet Union is made up of 100 nationalities with 60 written languages He said they are experimenting w uh free enterprise to alleviate the shortages in Russia and they are shocked at how rich people are getting But they are goHe ing to continue the experiment cracked jokes but never smiled which language training) One man I talked to explained their maternity leave All women are given 18 months off after their babies are born the first 12 months with full pay and their jobs are guaranteed by law to be there for them when they decide to return to work as long as it is within the 18 months After that day care is available but in his case his mother is tending their new baby He also has an eight year old daughter who likes American TV SheRa and GI Joe are among her favorites and she hates Mr Rogers Neighborhood On leaving the Embassy their was lots of literature available so I brought some home They were out of the Human Rights one so I may write and ask for a copy Our NNA Executive Vice President told me on the way to the bus that they a desire to send had expressed American journalists to Russia I told him to let me know if the price was right I’d love to go And then more visiting back at the hotel (Are we exhausted yet?) Somewhere in my notes I found this quote “Postal rates and the Lord will rise on Easter” So be looking forward to that Saturday morning I had a 7 am meeting (5 our time and you know how hate early hours) And then a meeting with John G Mulligan Sr Assistant Postmaster General Operations and Support Groups I almost feel sorry for postal people who address our group it is like walking into a pit of angry cobras but he did fairly well This is the first year in many that we did not visit the White House or be adHowever dressed by the President there was an article in the Washington Post that said "In separate speeches to the national Newspaper Association the Reagans decried the problem but the President noting a new public awareness that ‘drugs hurt that drugs kill’ said ‘For the first time we are seeing progress’” Hmmmmmm??? We were then off to Annapolis but as I am on page 10 on my little computer and it is 2 am I’ll save that for the next time I forgot to mention the relative part had been told that a David Beckwith writes for Time Magazine and he is supposed to be on our family tree so I decided to try to get a hold of him as our tree in the west doesn’t have many branches Well I did (and the phone number wasn’t easy to find) He was most pleasant on the phone and said he wished we could get together and talk more but he had to catch a plane as his assignment was to follow the Bush campaign He is a red head and journalist - sounds like a relative to me (Next week Annapolis) Calendar BRITTNEY SMITH VICTOR TRY SMITH at the Soviet KARASIN editor of Embassy 4(24 Editorial Carder Dawn Reporter at Large Advertising Mood Riey t Salet bikng Legal Salet Rita Rotnmon Juke Ward Geertz Design Httmorc Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Deb Greathouse Accounts Receivable Circulation Juke Commercial 120 Out of County County - s oU cm nm Till M 00 III 00 per year per ( months Send Address Delta 249 taufi rmd 0400 rnip changes 4624 Utah pm m conrvn I I it Uuk M424 StZJH runusnms iirfwii Della Area to otr® rr WUOft ttjuxa’Oi GEN- Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Mon & Thurs 9 am noon & pm pm B cents Copy Single POSTMASTER Bin Embassy Printing In Advance Subscriptions In County Stl 00 per year SI0 00 per months In County PO Soviet Dutton SheWe of the Grculation Comp Circulation Production Rita Robinson Out at BUFFET Goertz Ward and March 25 Cub Scout Basic Training orders for garden seed to Extension office March 26 Delta Catholic Women Spring Fling Bazaar 10 am 3 pm church hall West Millard Pool Swimming celebrates 9th aniversary noon to 5 pm Free swimming Open House Holden Fire Station pm Everyone invited Stock Show tagging (sheep and swine) Scipio Town Coral 10 am Fillmore Steve Kelly 4th West pm Delta vicinity Stockshow Barn 10 a m - noon LynndylLeamingtonOak City Rulon Dutsons 10 am Ted Wilson will announce candidacy for Governor State House Museum legislative room 10 am March 28 Immunization Clinic Delta Public Health office am & Editor - Soviet Life & Delta Wed 9 pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices Feb 16 - April 15 for 1988 Wheat and Feed Grain program ASCS office March 3 25 “Spotlight on Two Local Women Artists” the work of Lorraine Stewart and Beverly Roth Open during Library hours or by appointment with librarian March 15 - April 15 “Utah Art of the Depression” exhibit Delta City Library March 24 Women’s Cancer Screening Clinic in Fillmore For Appt call Elva at Dutton 8 TO THE EDITOR Johnson and Johnson bandaids are available but not as popular as gauze I couldn’t figure out why until I cut my finger Within 20 minutes the humidity had turned the adhesive on the into goo Japanese also honk their horns on their cars differently from Americans brazener They honk as a ly and repetitively and also as a thank you Both are a bit maddening to me But they also have the habit at night of turning off their lights while stopped at a stop light a considerate practice And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked my blood type Seems a someone wrote a “What blood types mean to society” and while not everyone believes everyone is curious Right after that they want to know my age! Then I’m either asked how tall I am (hyaku nana 175 cm or what was the “year” I was born in That means was I born under the sign of the snake rat boar etc according to the Chinese zodiac Finally where were my ancestors from They are seldom impressed with my the Swedish English ancestors-ju- st ones Japanese don’t use the Western calendar so this year is Showa means the year of this emperor If I asked a student what year he was born he can’t tell me But the system is so confusing even to Japanese that they have to carry a calendar around saying how long the reign of the the emperor before this one one before him Japanese like to take cultural classes in ikebana (flower arranging) sado (tea ceremony) karate I found out about class near my a shodo calligraphy house on Wednesday evenings and gladly paid the 2500 yen a month for lessons The third lesson was held in Fukuyama not in Fuchu and cost me about 10000 yen ($7000) but it was an interesting day I found out that it is possible for me to kneel down on the floor from nine in the morning until five and still walk I worked on two characters all day long “haru” “kaze” spring wind But 735 JAPAN course I didn’t master them The strokes are difficult and unpredictable with my foreign hand But there is a wonderful sense about the characters and the discipline is good for me even soothing On Wednesday night I walk home cook macaroni and cheese and feel like I should immediately go to bed But I pack up my shodo equipment and walk to class and enter another world A world that requires all my concentration and then some By the time 9:30 rolls around I’m refreshed It’s odd but true The other men and women chatter in Japanese a little but mostly are serious and quiet They think it’s a real treat to have a “strange” gaijin (alien) in their class They ooh and aah about my work which is of course of gaijin quality The consolation I have is that beginners start in Grade 10 but I graduated to Grade 9 right after Christmas about a month after I began Last class we had a farewell party for one member and a welcome party for me Japanese love parties We drank tea or coffee ate mochi (sweet rice cakes) and sandwiches and cookies and sponge cake filled with sweet beans Everyone talked about age blood types and zodiac signs Most of the teachers’ parties (we’ll have one for the end of the school year) are surprising to me in the amount of beer consumed If a Japanese wants to flatter his colleague he pours him some beer If the other Japanese wants to accept his friendship he HAS to drink the beer It makes for a lot of drunk Japanese I’m eternally grateful that I don’t drink I was invited to a party given by the Fuchu city for all the “gaijin” living here (about 40 counting children) Plenty of beer and Coke and orange and Sprite sushi potato salad sandwiches country music Quite an international affair Mazada soccer players a girl friend from from Holland even Chinese Americans England Mormon missionaries from Pocatello and Springville As I’ve said before everyday in Japan is an adventure for me of The County Agent r Data Publisher Susan IM MM Hiroshima by Jane Beckwith foreign correspondent How about a potpourri of small observations about Japanese life I’ve been trying to remember some of the miscellaneous things I’ve noticed here but as I sit to type they have flown out of my head Let’s see For one thing as you may have gathered from other reports teachers in Japan have a faculty room rather than individual classes All the teachers’ desks are in one or two central rooms The classes belong to the students In fact each class stays together for the entire day the entire year Their entire high school life Wowl That’s a long time to be but a long time to make together friends for life although the opposite is possible The class has a homeroom teacher He or she takes such good care of the class that my comment to one teacher seemsaying that one girl in Class ed unhappy provoked him to say he would talk with her homeroom teacher If students get in trouble the police call the parents AND the homeroom teacher Absenteeism in school is almost nonexistent Homeroom teachers call roll the first of the day and then before first period he or she writes the name of the student on a blackboard in the teachers’ room I’ve never seen more than nine or ten names on any day and this is a school of 1400 students If a student gets sick he or she has the homeroom teacher sign a paper and then he has permission to go home And the way the teacher signs the He uses a stamp paper is interesting called a “hanko” It’s more important than a teacher’s handwritten signature It’s not that all Japanese write alike it’s just that Japanese characters do have a certain similarity Besides hankos have been around in Japan for a long time use gauze more than Japanese children use s in America Gauze is arms wrists even heads The teacher next to my desk cut his finger on the ot a severe ut playground-nthe next day his whole fist was bandaged Community USPS I M Beckwith Honmachi Thanks again for your help in making the Daffodil Crusade a success We really appreciate your support The pictures and cheap insurance for a 500 dollar calf” We hear a lot of talk about percent calving And while that is our goal many breeding programs fall short Nationally only 65 percent of the cows exposed to a bull actually calve Herd health takes the biggest cut in these percentages and it’s the easiest to correct Drug companies have done a good job in developing new vaccines vaccines to make and combination health programs easier Let me give you an example but first I’ll give you some assumptions If I manage my cows to calve in a 60 day period starting the first of March the i plan to turn my bulls out the first of June and pull them back out the first can then work my cows of August and bulls around the first of April and again in October The first of April is important because some vaccines need to be given 30 days prior to breeding If not they can actually abort your cows That’s why you let your vet figure it out for you Also booster shots for some clostridials need to be given in the fall fair flay' Given all that good stuff I can purchase one combination shot for $202 that will protect me for BRSV IBR BVD 5 way Lepto and Vibivo Simple add in another 61 cents for TBZ wormer and 74 cents for an ear tag and presto-I’- ve got a spring health program for $337 a head While you’ve got them up it’s a good time to give them a quick physical before you turn them loose They should be mouthed checked for lice foot rot cancer eye or other injuries Often your vet can remove eye tumors so the cow will stay around another year Calves won’t need anything except dehorning castrating fly tags and worming as a general rule But if you’ve had scour problems pink eye enterotoximia or selinium deficiencies there are shots for them too Now that those jobs are done and all the cows have calved it’s a good time to creep your cows 3 pounds of grain for 30 to 60 days to help them get settled Always check with your veterinarian first when considering a health program for your particular
