Show Millard County Community Event rzi'fTt t£y Tracy named Academic National Award winner Our Town “Fillmore” All-Americ- Qki By Stella Day CAROLINE SMITH CALUSTER Caroline Clara Smith Callister was of John Smith the third Patriarch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints He was an uncle of the Prophet Joseph Smith Clarissa Carolyn’s mother Lyman was the daughter of Richard Lyman who served under General Putnam in many of his most daring The General said of engagements Richard “If I had a thousand men like Richard Lyman I would drive the Redcoats out of America in six the daughter months” Caroline was born in Pottsdam New York June 6 1820 and married Thomas Callister on Aug 31 1845 Eight children were bom to them Being baptized when she was 14 years old Caroline had shared in all of the hardships of the Saints including being driven from Nauvoo after the death of Prophet Joseph The family was in Winter Quarters during the dreary winter of 1846 Here in a wagon her son Thomas was bom Caroline was afflicted with scurvy and other afflictions brought on by exposure and lack of food She lost her baby when he was eight months old His name is on the Winter at monument Quarters which was dedicated on Nebraska Sept 20 1936 After the baby died Caroline was still ill when they were ready to leave for Salt Lake City Helen Mar Callister the second wife of Thomas held Caroline up in the wagon as they passed the grave of Thomas in order that Caroline could get a view of the grave Caroline with the rest of the Thomas Callister family crossed the plains in the company that followed the orginal company and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sept 25 1847 Caroline had Since from birth been a nipple the privations and of the pioneers were sufferings These difficult for her to bear hardships and her weakened condition were no doubt factors which caused her to lose her second child a sweet baby girl named Clarissa rm The National Secondary Education Council announced that today Charles Tracy of Holden Utah has been named an Academic The NSEC has established the Academic Scholar Award Program in order to offer deserved to superior recognition students who excel in the Academic The Academic disciplines Scholars must earn a 33 or better grade point average Only Scholars selected by a seconschool instructor counselor dary or other are qualified sponsor These scholars are also accepted for awards other eligible given by the NSEC These are awards few students can ever hope to attain Charles who attends Millard High School was nominated for this National Award by Dorothy Frith Meredith National Membership Charles will appear in Chairperson the Academic Scholar which is Directory published nationally and supporting our “Recognizing youth is more important than ever before in American history Certainly winners of the Academic Awards should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement” said Dr George Stevens Thus the mother was again heartbroken and childless Three other children Bathsheba Samuel and Ashael all died in infancy One Philomela died at the age daughter of 27 Clara the next child lived to maturity and married Francis M Gara’s sudden death in Lyman Southern Colorado in 1892 was such a shock to Caroline that she never fully recovered from it As Caroline stood by the death bed of her father in 1954 holding in her arms her nine month’s old baby Mary her father said “Caroline this child shall be the greatest blessing you ever have” This prophetic vision was realized when the death of Gara left Mary the sole survivor of the eight children Caroline had borne Mary took Charles Tracy loving care of her mother during her declining years and was a joy and comfort to her mother all of her declining years lived on the Thomas Caroline farm near the Jordan Callister River when this part of the valley Here savage was almost a desert Indians and wild beasts roamed at will The family was later sent to where Thomas Callister Fillmore of the became the first president Millard Stake and Caroline became the second president of the Fillmore Relief Society She served for seven years She died Jan 9 1895 at the age of 74 years The Church of Christ stressing New Testament undenominational meets in the baseChristianity ment of the Fillmore City Building each Sunday morning Everyone is welcome Worship Service: 10:30 am :1 5 am Adult Bible Study: Children's Bible School: 0:30 am Wednesday evening Bible Study is at 7:30 pm at the El Rancho Motel For further Information call 743 5864 and services for Holy Family Catholic Mission will be held at 4:30 pm on Sunday in of the the basement City Mass Building Father Michael Winterer and will Deacon James McElfresh be coming from Richfield’s St Elizabeth Church We as Catholics are so fortunate to have their services All interested are welcomed N Main -
