Show Serving Utah’s Great Pahvant Valley V USPS 349 - 520 Vol Plural Family continued on page three Girl Shoots Self in Foot Kate HtUeabraad A 13 year old girl from Murray Utah may be taking a gun safety refresh er course after she accidentally shot herself in the foot on Thursday afternoon while target shooting at the Scipio gravel pit with other family members The girl's parents own property in Scipio says Sheriffs Deputy Devon Quamberg who investigated the incident Deputy Quamberg stated that the family uses the Scipio property as a getaway location The g iri had been given the 22 calibre She had ptistol as a Christmas present taken a gun safety course after receiving the firearm The gun supposedly discharged as the girl was placing it back into a side holster said Deputy Quamberg He added that the specifics of the accident are unclear but evidently the hammer was still cocked The bullet entered the girl's right foot just missing the bones behind her toes She was treated at the Fillmore Medical Center and released According to Deputy Quamberg the girl said it hurt “real bad" 5 5 August 1993 County Will Say "I Do" To New Miss Millard This Saturday Case Dismissed Against Kate HeQtabraad The Steven 21 Bjorkman plural family headquartered about 25 miles northwest of Delta expressed jubilation at the outcome of their day in court July 29th in Millard County's Fourth District Court It could more accurately be called their minute in Court Before the prospective jurors had wanned up their seats attorney David Leavitt representing Janet Thompson (a plural wife to Mr Bjorkman) made a motion to the Court that the charges of custodial interference a class A misdemeanor and child abuse a class A misdemeanor be dismissed The la w as written did not apply he argued “Neglect is not abuse and isn’t covered by the statute What they did isn't against the law" Judge John C Backlund agreed The case was dismissed County Deputy Attorney Dexter Anderson argued briefly and then moved the Court to also dismiss the last remaining charge against Mrs Thompson a class B misdemeanor of Resisting Arrest With all charges dropped against Mr Bjorkman and his alleged second wife the family felt they had won a victory — and expressed more than a little anger at the process Mr B jorkman a proponent of plural marriage staled he “felt satisfied in some respects that the judicial system wouldn't swallow the state's theory of child abuse" “It wouldn't judicially float" he said The charges came after Millard County's Sheriff s Department learned that three boys ages 2 4 and 5 were living on their own at the Bjorkman home in the remote area of Sugarville for 7 days in the spring of 993 Steven Bjorkman (father of the 14ycaro!d)and plural wife Janet Thompson (mother of the other two) had gone to California where Mr Bjorkman works as a beekeeper Karen Bjorkman the mother of the old and legal wife to Mr Bjorkman was in Salt Lake City Family Service authorities were alerted and they intervened taking two of the boys from the home and placing them with foster care (The older boy was not in the home he had gone to slay at a friend's home in Partoun) The two boys were then entered into Delta Middle School where they began regular classes Mrs Thompxton learned of the intervention and came back to Utah took the boys out of school and back to the Sugarville home The Sheriff s department was called and deputies began to look for them At apiproximalcly 11:30 pm believing that the family members were hiding in the house Deputies B4 No Parents: Dana Wright and Marilyn Bill Wright Nancy Christensen Parents: Archie and Shirley Christensen Kathryn Anne Ekins Parents: David and Linda Ekins photography by Kate HeUenbrand The Steve Bjorkman plural family is all smiles after the state's case against them was dismissed by Judge Backlundon a matter of law Left: Janet Thompson Steve Bjorkman and Karen Bjorkman say they may now file a civil law suit against the County Attorney's office tf Deborah Marie Tanner Parents: William and Sandra Tanner Andrea Dutson Parents: George and Sandra Dutson Angie Dutson Parents: Lambert and Anna Jane Dutson f if r Fillmore Stake President David Christensen demonstrates the two fisted approach to Dinner at Fillmore's Family Picnic held Saturday night in the North Park The party was a chance to sit and swap stories listen to local talent and just relax Everyone was invited to thebarbeque buffet and the event was free courtesy of Fillmore's Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints Mr Christensen says that two years ago the Park was the site for a similar dinner thrown for the departing Kem River We can only hope this becomes an annual event Pipeliners New Fillmore Principal X Ld‘ r 1 i 1 j '5L Parents: Scott and Barbara Anderson Shantelle Noyes Parents: Lloyd and Connie Noyes announced Leslie Sorensen Parents: Brent L and Beverly Sorensen -
