On the one TO THE by Sue I’m still struggling with one handed typing so the Taiwan report is still in limbo I do have plenty of pictures however These were taken at a park the name escapes me at the moment It is a park that is very popular place for the bride photos There is a hill very beautiful Buddhist Temple and other impressive statues It is located on a overlooking the ocean There are street vendors games and little electric cars which play “Fur Elisc" families for favorite It is beautiful peaceful and obviously a place The latest report for the arm is good newbad news The good news is to take off the brace and start exercising it The bad news is the brace will continue to be with me for another 2 months The Dukes of Dung Once the three dukes were so disturbed by the amount of dung that was accumulating in their fiefdom that they decided to take matters into their own hands for once The problem was this There were thousands of horses in the which produced a great kingdom amount of dung The stench of the dung had been making many of the subjects of and the kingdom ill unproductive hence untaxable Many of the citizens had complained about how the dung had been affecting property problem values and the work ethic in general No matter where you went in the happy valley the dung was visible Something had to be done As the three dukes met they thought about their problem Obviously there had to be a tax put upon dung But how avoid to offending the great prince to the west? He had the largest carriage in the valley drawn by 1000 horses and certainly if the dukes taxed dung the prince would be wroth and perhaps form his own fiefdom Then the dukes came up with a wonderful idea Rather than tax all in the valley for every horse they owned the dukes would tax only those who owned bams Of course since all of the peasants kept their horses in bams they ' would bear the largest portion of the tax So what if there were bams with no horses within this tax would solve all their problems Especially since the prince to the west had no bams Yes the people of the valley fought the tax valiantly but with the increased employment from all of the bam inspectors and the increased tax base the peasants of the valley eventually settled back into their norma contentment After all they were much too stupid to see through the plans of the dukes which of course is the way of the peasant Yet some say the sins of those dukes are visited upon us yet For it is said that as you approach the Center of that great valley a stench rises up to offend the nose of even the most congested Yes with the tax money of those humble peasants the duke built themselves a mighty white castle of dung where the dukes of dung sit even now stinking up the place with their vile plans It is for this reason to this very day this mighty castle built of dung is the residence of those most foul and unnatural Sincerely G Dane Allred Springville Another close call It was another close call A child was nearly hit by a car racing from the tech to the high school This time the child was quick enough to run out of the way as the around the comer onto vehicle the unpaved alley on 50 East 200 North The times when preschool and kindergarten children walk to and from school are especially scary Eight limes a day there is a barrage of vehicles loaded with high school students travelling between the tech and high school Ironically at the same time a practically empty bus lakes the same route If a child were to be injured or killed by one of these student driven vehicles during school time the school district would probably be liable The problem may seem insignificant now: a few tickets extra gasoline money wear and tear on the veh iclcs a few close calls And possible solutions to these little concern may be unpopular reduced speed zones constant patrolling mandating students ride the lech bus or a closed campus But these options may quickly gain popularity and feasibility--i- f the next time it isn’t a close calL Karrol Corey Anne Stoddard Tess Rawllnson Julie NeLsen Lynne Meinhardt Appalled at coverage I am a native of Sutherland and one of your longtime subscribers I have been appalled at the manner in which The Chronicle Progress has covered the Archuleta murder trial To lose a child has to be one of the worst experiences faced by parents But to have sordid details spread all over the pages of your paper (a small hometown weekly) has to have compounded the grief of the Church family deserves better and so do your readers Some of your subscribers may want AMMO Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s Office 2nd Thursday of Month Great Basin Historical Society meeting 7:30 pm Museum open every day pm The Millard County Chronicle Progress US PS Published 0 at Delta every Thursday Utah 84624 by DuWiI Publishing Local ed at 40 N 300 W Publisher Susan - On Tuesday Jan 9 1990 an jet flying out of Hill Air Force Base dropped two externa fuel tanks into the Great Salt Lake The pilot was reacting to a faulty fire warning light when he jettisoned the tanks The tanks were 7 feet long 3 feet in diameter and weighed about 2000 pounds fully loaded They contained 300 gallons of fuel While technically not bombs if the tanks had landed near or hit someone they may have produced similar results - And so on How many other incidents such as those mentioned here have taken place on public lands in past years is not known How many will take place in the future is also unknown (Next week: Why the Incidents occurred and how to keep them from happening again) by Ken Rand continued DEIS 20 26 27 play “Meadowlarks” 7 pm lst2nd Ward January 18 Duuon B except Sunday Every Thursday TOPS meets at Delta Middle School dining room 5 pm 3rd Tuesday Food handlers class Delta Public Health 2:30 pm 3rd Thursday Food Handlers class Fillmore Public Health 2:30 pjn 10 am Wednesdays Story Hour Delta City Library 24th January Emergency Medical Training Course Delta Tuesdays 0 pm & Saturdays 9 to feed on every detail of this atrocious murder However they could have had them no doubt from the large city daily papers and the televised reports As the Wood trial for the same murder commences in February I sincerely hope that you will show some consideration and compassion toward the Church family so lacking in your coverage of the Archuleta trial continued ground “stirrup high" 23375 pounds of ordnance scrap metal was found last fall in a sweep of 68000 acres of BLM land near naval bombing ranges at Fallon Nevada Navy officials said “some of the bombs may have been dropped as long as 30 years ago” Also 28136 rounds of ammunition were found along with 1389 live bombs and 2230 dud bombs The cleanup w as called “Operation Ugly Baby" (See adjacent article) A hyrdogen bomb was dropped three miles south of AlNew Mexico in 1957 buquerque Shrapnel flew as far as a mile The bomb did not explode and nobody was hurt The incident was discovered in 986 by Albuquerque Journal reporter David Morrissey through a Freedom of Information Act inquiry Official cause: human error Two bombers strayed off the Navy’s Chocolate Mountains Bombing Range in south central California Saturday Nov 11 1989 They dropped a dozen bombs on BLM land Camper Bob Koch was injured in the incident that forced his companions to dive for cover Suspected cause: human Local residents recall three ocerror casions when cruise missiles crashed into the West Desert around 1985 One The hearings will be held in Salt Lake City Ogden Dugway Tooele Wendover Delta Fillmore Nephi Baker Partoun and Ibapah Times and places will be announced when the DEIS is released “We have been asked to make sure that we really open this process" Bartol said “so we’re going to try to do it" Comments made at the hearings will be integrated into the Final Environmental Impact Statement Bartol said he will be looking for comment on the environmental impacts of the project and the Air Force’s analysis of those impacts “Yesit will go into the document if somebody says ‘I don’t like the Air Force’ or ’Not here or whatever" he said “but this is not really an election “I want to make sure we have the best environmental document and we solicit input on it Are our figures correct? Did we use the right methods? What do you think of the impacts here etc? Can you think of any other impacts? Those kinds of things" The hearings are chaired by Air Force judges “Their purpose in this thing is to make sure that it is fair and impartial” Bartol said In order to "get this thing on a timely schedule" B artel said people are asked to respond during the comment period "Thereisacutoffdate"hesid“and we can’t hold thaL It’s important for people to know to respond by that cutoff date" Like tlie DEIS the Final OS is writ- - 1 K' hand wishy on the other washy EDITOR ten by the Air Force with cooperation from the Bureau of Land Management The FEIS is usually published about three months after the hearings “dependent on the extent and scope of the comments" Bartol said “If everything goes fairly smoothly and we have to make few changes it could go quicker" The Air Force and the BLM then prepare a Record of Decision That could be made in July or August Bartol said Then after a mandatory w ait period construction could begin (y Rand by Ken (firmly committed to ambivalence) people who drive to the top of a mouna tree over knock lank tain ini Sherman and decide it’d be a neato place to build a casino Proponents wax rhapsodic Opponents wax their skis Proponents say the wilderness gets so quiet that sometimes you can hear an antelope burp five miles away Opponents want to record the burp and sell it to tourists Wilderness is something you don’t have to pay to get in to sec and you don't have to stand in line for it On the other hand there is no cable TV in the wilderness and nobody to tell you where the restrooms are Next time you're at one of those rallys watch for the guy with the loupe He’s a spy for the Hunters United Against Commies and he’s armed with a One of the reasons I am campaigning for a constitutional amendment to make it legal to have no opinion about things (which would give you the right to shoot pollsters on sight) is that I am resolutely undecided about this wilderness issue I think Nobody seems to be able to speak Doubletalk about it coherently and backtalk predominate Bash two facts together and you get oatmeal I with lumps keep adding two and two and ending up with five It’s a good thing I'm good at English because I ain't no good at math B ut I 'm going lo keep try ing to figure it out Proponents say we ought to have lots of wilderness so we can go out into the woods and look at the pretty trees and rocks and bugs and flowers and not have to trip over empty beer cans and shotgun shells and I'm all in favor of that But opponents say that if we don’t have wilderness we won’t have to put up with blocking the smelly demonstrators roads and we'll all be rich and taller our hair will grow back and we’ll lose 20 pounds and I'm in favor of that But proponents say opponents want to pave everything except Main Street and the airport runway and install escalators and wheelchair ramps to the tops of any hill higher than 200 feet and I'm opposed to that And opponents say proponents want to turn everything into wilderness except Main Street and the airport runway and then restrict both to pedestrian use only and I’m opposed to that too I'm confused Again It was different with the hazardous waste issue where opponents drooled a lot and proponents hid underneath their beds You knew right away who you were supposed to hate With the wilderness issue there are wacky people on both sides and nobody is fishing in the middle It reminds me of politics But it's not as simple as one side wanting to blow away a few critters and rip their skins off whenever the mood strikes them and the other side wanting to be able to cavort and frolic in the meadow with Bambi and Thumper Opponents see proponents as backpacking hippie wimps with granola bars and cameras Proponents see opponents as hunting pistol made by Uzi And next time you're at one of those meetings watch for the guy in the sandals He’s a spy for Power to the Bunnies and he’s armed with dirty pinko liberal commie ratfink propaganda that he'll try to make you read One question I would like to ask of proponents is: “Does wilderness have bugs in it?” I would also ask opponents: “Who picks up the litter?" The answers if coherent delivered in English and not supported by cannon fire could influence my opinion Still I intend to study the issue critically and carefully Then I’ll jump on the side that provides the best bribe lo support their cause I accept bribes by the way Don’t be shy It is most likely however that your opinion or my opinion will have nothing to do with what the government actually docs with the wilderness issue But this is America you might say They have a thing here called due prochas to ess That’s where the listen to you belly ne about what they've already decided to do despite whatever you told them you wanted done in the first place before they ignore you again and go ahead and do whatever you didn't want them to do after all Maybe the best thing for me to do is remain neutral on the wilderness issue But I'll be darned if I can figure out which side to be neutral on Ask the HELP Unit Highland Ridge Hospital answers your questions about addiction to alcohol orother drugs If you have a question please write to: Marvin Carter Highland Ridge Hospital 4578 Highland Drive Salt Lake City Utah 84119 If you or someone you care about has a problem and you need immediate help call the confidential helpline All letters and calls (801) will be kept in strictest confidence Question: I’ve got a friend who drinks every day and drinks a lot But he also works six days a week dresses in expensive suits runs marathons and laughs at the idea of alcoholism I’m confused Answer Of course you are confused And probably so is your friend There is a saying that it is “easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to get into heaven" What this means is that it is often very difficult for successful people or people with strong egos to look at themselves honestly In fact your friend’s constant use of alcohol is a way of avoiding looking at his deeper feelings This is part of the denial process Addiction to alcohol or other drugs is the only disease that starts out by preventing the victim from seeing the symptoms If you think about it some bf ydltf ' friend's other traits are also ways of ' denying internal feelings Compulsive work compulsive dressing and compulsive exercise are also addictive This is not to say that exercise work or good grooming are bad hey are admirable traits But people can and do become compulsive and obsessive about them and anything carried to extreme can be damaging Your friend may be on top of the world now but medical science has long known that substance abuse is a “progressive” disease This means that eventually it will take its toll Noboby can drink the way your friend does forever and when the deterioration invariably sets in it will be more difficult than ever for your friend to end the downward cycle Being willing to stop and look at himself may be difficult now but it will be impossible later on It is a strange irony of alcoholism and drug addiction that the strong one and the smart ones are more likely to become the losers Conversely those who have more willingness to let go of their own egos are more likely to become the winners £ 3 To all the people who think the press goes too far sometimes consider the alternative vfrcim t i NVASHINGTON (AP) about the Na v’s — l5 New details - 3 aters about 80 miles the ebsest point of the Okinawa IT If by Ken Rand j AA MEETING SCHEDULE Monday Mental - 8 learn more about the role of a five Press and how it protects your rights call the First Amendment Center at To pm Health 51 North Center If the press didn’t tell us who would?
