Allan Cindy Crafts Delta athletes shine at the Utah Summer Games Cedar City was the setting for the fourth annual Utah Summer Games three weeks ago 77(X) athletes from all over Utah merged in Cedar City to in 34 different competed sporting events Fven though the Delta athletes were small in number they left their mark at the games with their outstanding performances In track Russell Anderson of Delta took a gold in the 5 K (3 mile) run in the 2 and 3 year old class and David won a Russell’s brother Anderson bronze in the discus for the 10 and year old class Rex Butterfield Cody Hamblin Mark Winsor and Matt Long (from North Sevier) earned a brone in the 4 x 00 relay for the high school division Delta is always outstanding in wrestling and the Summer Games was no ception for these fine wrestlers They all placed high in their age and weight divisions In the junior high division Joel Holman placed first at 12 Ray Chris Jackson took a 2nd at 132 and Ky lie Jackson won a 3rd at 143 In the high Chase placed 4th at 154 school division Micah Chase took 1st Sean Thomas placed 1st at at 189 178 Joe Larsen won 2nd place at 189 Kandy Smith took 2nd at 220 and Clyde Shumway placed 2nd at heavyweight In the open division (college age) Jim Cox placed 1st at 149 Joel Holman Joe Larsen and Sean Thomas are members of this years Utah Junior National Wrestling Team and are presently in the process of competing against teams from Wyoming and Nebraska as they travel back to Iowa to compete in the Junior National Tinals Another Delta athlete stood out at the Summer Games Cyclist W'ayne Black won gold in the 60 mile cycling road race and look a silver in the 25 mile road race Nine Delta Master (adult) swim team members swam better than they had ever swum before in Cedar City and came away winning 24 gold 27 silver bronze medals for a total of 62 and The Utah Summer Games medals isn’t good enough word outstanding for what these nine swimmers complished at Cedar City Cindy Crafts established two records at the games in the 1000 yard and 1650 yard freestyle events This was the first year that these two events were held so Cindy has the distinction of holding the records Here minutes straight without a break and this is what Gladys has been doing for a long time way before she joined the pool’s 50 Mile Club Jn fact Gladys would probably be over the 200 mile mark if she would have been keeping track from the time she started swimming On June 27 Doug Corey son of Dave and Carol Corey of Delta finished his fust 50 miles of swimming Doug is an excellent swimmer and at the pool on July 13 was a busy but fun event Over 600 prizes were given away along with $3000 in coins Over 275 youth came and tried their luck at diving for the colored washers and coins which working at the pool until last May she proved her worth right from the start Paula does an excellent job on the lifeguard chair she is very alert and truly stops an accident before it happens Paula
